Welcome to the Rush Hour. Your daily dose of pop culture for your Rush Hour ride. Buckle up and enjoy the drive with your host, stand up comedian, Dave Neal. Good morning, everybody. Happy Monday to you on this September 30th, 2024. That's right. We are wrapping up September on a Monday. And on this Monday morning rush hour, we'll go over which movie bombed at the box office this weekend.
Also the fallout Chapel Roan is facing after canceling her headlining gigs over the weekend, but. Plus a major Hollywood breakup as Kristen Cavallari parts ways with a young Buck boyfriend. And we've got Anna Delvey on Tori Spelling's podcast explaining what it was like to be on Dancing with the Stars.
She also says that the show exploited her. And also I've got a good news story as a hospital. receives an unexpected visit from captain Jack Sparrow. And we'll also have some updates over these real tragic fallout from this hurricane that we all experienced this past weekend. All right, folks, I've got all these stories and more coming up next on the rush.
Look, I'd be remiss if I didn't open, uh, on, on this episode, talking about the hurricane Helene, uh, the flooding has stranded hundreds of North Carolina residents as storms death toll reaches 95. Sadly, we know that toll is going to go up. There's a lot of people missing. Uh, I've got to actually, my sister in law, they are sick.
But they are still without power and I know there's plenty of people that need help. I don't know if there's anyone in our community that needs help in any way whatsoever. Let me know, send me a DM and we'll see if there's a way we can help in whatever way possible, but it's going to be a long time repairing for some of these communities in North Carolina.
And even where I'm in, in Tennessee, there was actually some rescues. My family, we stayed safe. It was nothing but a bunch of rainfall here. So we were very lucky, but thanks. To everybody for, you know, those that checked in, uh, and, uh, again, anyone in our community, if, if there's a way we can help you, please let me know, uh, in good news, uh, cause we have to cleanse the pallet there.
Cause it's really been a, a rough one. Johnny Depp surprised a bunch of kids at a hospital in Spain with visit in his pirates of the Caribbean costume. The actor arrived as captain Jack Sparrow at Donna seat, uh, Donna university hospital. Uh, ready to delight the young children and apparently stayed in character the whole time.
So a bunch of kids, uh, that are in the hospital for reasons out of their control had a moment to take off from, you know, dealing with, you know, issues that kids just shouldn't have to deal with. Right. So. Good to hear that Johnny Depp is doing his part. I guess, at least here to bring some joy to some kids now over the box office.
We, the box office weekend did not provide much joy to people out there. Megalopolis crumbled with a 4 million opening. You guys remember we talked about this film. They thought, Oh no, it might only make 5 million. Well, it only made 4 million. This was a film self financed by Francis Ford Coppola. They're saying he spent 120 million.
It's like, look. I mean, do whatever you got to do. That's a lot of money to lose on a film. I'm actually wanting to watch it now just to see what the, what the, uh, with, with all the commotions all about after premiered at the Cannes film festival, no one wanted to distribute it. And, uh, so I guess eventually it was distributed and, um, not to not many fans, so we'll have to see, uh, has anyone seen it anyway?
I mean, it's kind of weird Megalopolis. I don't know. There's a, there's a lot going on in that title, but, um, I guess I'll wait till it's on Netflix. Well, Chapel Roan, like I said, has been in the news. Uh, pop star Chapel Roan canceled a few shows for mental health reasons. And everyone's saying, oh, this is the most Gen Z thing that you can't show up to your show, and this and that.
Look, clearly, the I don't know if a pop star's ever rose to fame faster than Chapel Roan has. And, you know, she's been arguing back and forth with people. She tried to give a nuanced take on her past. Politics and people shredded it. And, you know, it's almost like, it's almost like you can't even win at this point if you're her, uh, you know, to the point where I've gotten emails from people telling me, no, I got it all wrong about her.
Look, my, my first thought is don't take political advice from a 26 year old, let alone if they're a pop star, that's my first thought, do the same thing with Taylor Swift, take it with a grain of salt. But secondly, you know, it's like, you know, nobody knows what it's like to be in her position. Well, here's Gabby Windy explaining her thoughts on the Chapel Rowan situation.
She's got a great take. And I support Chapel Rowan and all her rights and wrongs. I feel terrible for the people who are traveling for the concert on the plane, finding out in real time, but this is a diva. We haven't seen one in a while. She was born to be this way. This relationship is unpredictable. We don't know how we're gonna feel after encounter.
It's a gamble. It's exciting. She's giving us something to talk about. People are like, where's her PR? Her PR is no PR. And it's working. I love an unhinged. And I think if someone is doing this in the name of mental health, what can we do? So the internet is ablaze with opinions about Chaperone. People saying, well, when Katy Perry found out she was getting divorced, she still went on stage that same day.
And it's like, all right, look, I don't know what's going on with Chaperone. Um, you know, and it does suck for the people that bought tickets to see her perform at the festival that she was at, but at the same time, you know, like she's just taking an absolute beating out there and I think what she should do is disengage with their fans.
I actually found this really great take online, uh, kind of about that, that the bigger you get, you have to stop engaging with so many people. It's almost like your brain can't handle it. Listen to this. I did see this news about Chapel and, um, yeah, I, I've read her statement. Basically, she said the reason she is canceling her appearance is because she's feeling overwhelmed.
And I believe that. I believe she's feeling overwhelmed. First of all, she's had a meteoric rise, um, just like an unprecedented level of fame so quickly. And also, She, she has crashed out a bit, um, over the last few days. And all of that I'm sure is overwhelming. And you know, anyone who follows me knows my favorite artists, two of my favorite artists are Beyonce and Taylor.
And one thing that I certainly have noticed, I'm sure all of us as, as fans have noticed is that both of them over the course of their careers, Beyonce more so than Taylor, but both of them have decreased the amount of access they give. to their fans by a lot. Like I said, Beyonce more so, like Beyonce barely talks to us these days, but even Taylor too has decreased how accessible she is to her fans.
And I think there's a big reason for that because I think, I wouldn't know, I'm not famous, but I think fame is Is extremely difficult and so she goes into this great point about how you just can't possibly communicate with that many people And I got to tell you like like like this, uh tiktoker I I can't imagine what it's like But I know say if I have a stand up show Where I might have 25 to 30 people that come to see me maybe 50 people that come to see me That could take me two hours of meeting greets after the show till the point where I my my voice is gone So, can you imagine on the level of Taylor Swift with, you know, 80, 000 people coming to a show every single night.
And then you've got, you know, I mean, I mean, you hate to even say it, but imagine how many of your fans have, you know, a terminal illness and you can't possibly say hi to every single person. You know, you're, you're, you're literally just, uh, just a one person there. So I feel like with Chapel Rhone, she's used to this parasocial, parasocial relationship she's had for the last decade, uh, through her come up and at one point or another, and maybe it's happened to you.
Right now she's gonna have to realize she can't be the thing. She always aspired to be the performer, the entertainer, while also being the friend. And I know that pisses off a lot of fans. I mean, I know I've had people say, oh Dave, you've changed. You're this and you're that. And it's like, well look.
There's just no proper way to handle communicating with more than a couple dozen people. Like, that's all you get in life. A couple dozen people, you know, you see these bride zillas, right? That's what they call the term for a bride when she's having a wedding. It's like, all right, so she's planning a wedding for 80 people and it's driving her crazy.
Imagine being a pop star. Okay. You know, it's not like your, your body builds extra ability to handle things. You know, you've only got so much in your limbic system. So I completely empathize with Chapel Rhone. And I really hope she's going to be okay. Uh, you know, what I did recently was, um, one of the devices, one of the apps that was giving me a lot of pain in my life, I deleted from my phone.
So I can still go to the website that that is that app, but I have to do it from my computer when I'm at work during business hours, so I've compartmentalized. Uh, the, the type of access I'm giving myself to people that are starting to demand things of me. And again, I'm, I'm, I'm a nobody. I'm just a comedian with a podcast.
You know what I mean? But I've got people demanding. I make certain content demanding. I respond to their questions, demand, and you know what, you know what I've done? I've just ignored them so I can continue with my own mental health. And to be quite honest, it's worked out quite well for me. It's worked out quite well for me because what I've realized it's kind of like the giving tree, right?
You'll just be you'll just be whittled down to a stump If you let people just continue to rip your branches off. And I know, I know on an individual level, people, they go, Oh, well, no, we were, we're here just to support you. I get that. And at some level, the best way to support is from, I don't want to say a far, but from a distance where you let the creator create and let Chappelle Rhone do her thing.
And if she's really going to burn out, you'd hate to see that. It was because she couldn't manage so many people loving her. Take the love and. Set boundaries so that you don't owe them anything in return. That's what it, that's what it comes down to. Everyone thinks they're entitled to something in return.
We helped build you. You don't. Nope, nope, nope, nope. That's not how it works because if she gave every person a piece of her, she'd have nothing left. That's that's the stump at the end of the giving tree. And I don't care what they say. That's not a healthy relationship. Okay. I got a lot of content to get to.
We're going to have to barrel through it. We have a busy, busy day ahead. We'll be back with more right after this. I wanted to support Anna Delvey or Anna Sorokin, whatever her name is. Uh, I wanted to support her on Dancing with the Stars. She was the first one eliminated, but she's just so dang unlikable.
So now she's explaining the remark that she made during her exit, where They said, what have you learned from the experience? And she goes, nothing. Well, now she says the judge's advice didn't help. So she learned nothing. Now, look, you know, just because you're telling the truth doesn't mean it's not an a hole thing to say.
Uh, here's what she had to say on Tori Spelling's misspelling podcast. And for me, like he would extend his hand when we were walking around set and for me to take his hand and go forward and I'm like, Oh no, no, no, no, no. I like to follow, wait, which doesn't make sense. But I like, yeah. And you never know where the pros is like, obviously they're being trained about like how to treat you and like, you never know what's sincere and what's just a job.
And that was kind of like my main issue with, um, Being on the show, not my main issue. One of the issues, but you like Ezra. I do. Yeah. Yeah. He's a very sweet person. It was his first season. Yeah. And, uh, imagine like his first season and he gets Anna Delvey. Like, he's probably like, Oh my gosh, it's a blessing and a curse at the same time.
Right. Yeah. I mean, I think it, uh, still ended up well for him because, yup. Yeah. It's like either scenario. He wins. If I do well, he does well. If I do badly, it's my fault because he's a new one and I'm so bad and just negative. And, uh, I don't know what she's talking about. No, you know, he didn't win. Nobody, nobody wants to be paired with Anna Delvey.
Uh, that's just, uh, you know, it's, it's radioactive. I know. And again, like I said, I was rooting for her. Uh, but she also slammed Dancing with the Stars for explosive. her for attention and said it was predatory. Anna, you got paid a hundred thousand dollars. She said, I feel that the show so obviously used me to drive up the ratings that they never had any plans to give me any chance to grow and only cared about exploiting me for attention.
Listen, if they wanted to exploit her, they would have kept her on longer. They gave her fair. They actually, they actually gave her a better scores than she deserved and said, Pretty nice things about her. And then when the audience didn't cheer for her, they kind of said, Hey guys, give her, give her, give her a shot.
So they actually treated her better than I think they're normal contestants. It just so happens the public didn't want to vote for her. And I know she's been in the United States for a couple of years now. Believe it or not, we have a democracy. Some will call it a Republic either way. You're right. Your vote counts and nobody voted for Anna Delvey.
So what, what else can you say about that? That's, that's just how it is. Um, so Anna Delvey is not the only one dealing with departure right now. Uh, Taylor Swift skipped Travis Kelsey's second straight chiefs game amid criticism over tight ends performance. Now this is really messed up. Like. I, you know, do I have to become a guy who's defending all the female pop stars out here?
Uh, because this is just ridiculous that we're going to pretend like Travis Kelsey, a grown man, a professional athletes, uh, game is going to be changed because Taylor Swift is in attendance. Now I know she comes with a bit, a lot of attention there, you know, they're, they, they really milked the Taylor Swift card, the NFL did, but Travis Kelsey is a hall of Fame worthy, tight end.
He's going to be okay. Sure. Did he, you know, go to a bunch of her shows in the off season? Yeah, I'm sure he did his workouts too. You know, I just, I just think it's absolutely wild out there that she's now feeling the pressure to not go while he kind of works out his early season. I don't know, folks, the world's getting a little crazy.
Well, you know what it comes down to? It comes down to this and this goes back to Chapel Roan and Taylor Swift. Audiences like to build a sandcastle so then they can kick it down. That's exactly what happens. And with Chapel Rhone, they built her up, they loved her, and then she got too big and they lost control, almost like the blimp on a windy day at the Thanksgiving day parade and all the little guys with the rope holding onto the blimp could no longer hold on.
That's how fans feel sometimes and how entitled they might feel. So, you know, I'd say to Travis and Taylor, go live your life. Now, speaking of like influencers and superstars, Logan Paul and Nina Agdal, I mean, they're as big as they come. Of course, he's one of the biggest YouTubers ever. And now their future, uh, YouTuber, uh, has arrived.
That's right. They had a baby. They welcomed their first child this month and shared some sweet shots of their little girl. They announced the birth of their daughter, daughter. a Saturday morning, sharing the news along with a sweet pick of the trio sitting together soon after her birth. Listen, I don't know a thing or two about Logan Paul, but these, these Paul brothers kind of came off ridiculous.
You know, just kids from the Midwest living their dream. But I mean, talk about, I mean, they are, they are worth, I mean, hundreds of millions. No, I mean, prime is the biggest energy drink out there. So, uh, to go from just some random kids in the Midwest to professional boxers, professional YouTubers, and a hundred millionaires, I mean, uh, what, what a wild ride.
It is right? Okay. Uh, what else do we got in the news here? We got, oh, this was the big story. We got the big story of the weekend. I was actually surprised to hear this. Kristen Cavallari. You know, this is my, this is my, uh, super bowl called it quits with Mark Estes after seven months. I like it when people share when they're excited about a new relationship.
And clearly the D was good as she said, so she really wanted to talk about it. But then when the thing ends, you know, people, you know, they go, Oh boy. So Kristen and Mark are done. So after seven months of dating sources close to the situation, tell TMZ, Kristen broke up with Mark this week. Because their relationship had run its course and was never intended to be forever.
On Friday, Kristen briefly mentioned the split to podcaster, Alex Cooper, while they chatted on stage during one of Cooper's unwell tour stops in Austin, Texas. So they first got together back in February and he's a lot younger. I don't have, oh, she's probably late thirties. Right. And he's like 25. And I know that might not sound like.
I don't know, uh, that, that serious, but, um, you know, I mean, you know, it's, it's an age gap. She's got a couple of kids and he's, you know, in a tick tock boy band, you know, clearly they come from a different worlds. Anyway, here's where they discussed, you know, what, you know, what they could possibly do moving forward.
What are my end goals with you and goal obviously would to be married and to have a happy life, have a baby. You can say, I mean, that's in there. Yeah, you can say it. I mean, it's in there. Yeah. I feel like that goes with being married and whatever, you know? Yeah. Okay. So there they are. I mean, look, I don't know if that's his end goal was with her.
I don't know if he's crushed, uh, but she, you know, she said it's run its course. So I guess that's what you got to do. She said it's over. What can you do? Uh, okay. Let's do an update on the astronauts. I know people have really, uh, you know, I'm not even saying this in jest. I've been fascinated by these two astronauts stranded in space.
Well, SpaceX says they're on their way. Rocket successfully lifts off to retrieve stranded astronauts. Now, after I read that title, I think, okay, well, they'll be back in a week, right? They'll be back in a couple of days. How long can it take? Well, they'll be back in February. SpaceX's Dragon is up and away.
Having just detached from the rocket, Crew 9 is expected to reach the International Space Station tomorrow and should return with Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the moon. Early next year. Okay. So it's not just an Uber pickup. They're clearly going to have to stick around for a little bit. Uh, so the mission, uh, blasted off Saturday and they're going to retrieve the astronauts.
I guess they're saying back in February, uh, of 2025, we'll have to see. I mean, can you imagine that? What a time? So, uh, and, and, and, you know, if I'm one of these astronauts, I mean, no offense, but wouldn't it be nice to just get picked up by NASA. Instead they got dropped off by Boeing. I mean, what kind of world do we live in?
They get dropped off by Boeing. And then now we've got Elon Musk, you know, uh, the guy who owns Twitter going to swing by on a rocket and pick you up. Oh, just wild stuff. Wild stuff. Indeed. Okay. Well, as promised, I got a couple more good stories to get to. So stick around. We'll be back with more right after this.
Oh, we have an update on the RFK story. Do you remember this one? RFK, I guess, was caught sexting with a journalist and now she's on leave. Well, who knows? This is from page six. com. So who knows if this is accurate, but they say RFK Jr. and star journalist, Olivia Nuzzi, had incredible FaceTime sex and said they loved each other, says a source.
Sources said that Nuzzi was at first disgusted by the Kennedy scion after he made a clumsy pass at her back in October. But after they began talking over texts, he love bombed her and she quickly fell so madly in love with him that she lived a double life for nearly a year, sharing long calls, endless texts and virtual sex with the former presidential candidate, all while engaged to her partner of almost a decade.
While technically he's not the former presidential candidate, he's a presidential candidate. In Nuzzy, even after Kennedy denied their affair in the press and even after he implied that he might sue her, is still in love with him. Oh boy. She's like, we got a clinger folks. Either way, Pete, look from reporters that I've heard from, they say she's like a respected journalist and they actually say the way she covered the presidential race was pretty good.
So I don't know. I mean, I guess you could be a respected journalist and still be a stage five clinger, or maybe that the whole story is made up and, you know, and they're just smearing her. What, what do I know really at this point? I don't know much about anything. Um, Uh, I'll tell you what I do know. I'll be, I'm going to be flying to New York city tomorrow, October 1st.
I've got a show at New York comedy club. I'll have links available. Send me a DM on Instagram if you want to know how to buy tickets. Uh, but it's going to be a good show. There's always like celebrity drop pins. I miss New York city. So if you're in New York city and want to come to that show, I've got that one on Tuesday and I think I'll have one on Thursday as well.
Um, but I, uh, dates on that later. And then in Rhode Island, I've got a show October 11th. That's a Friday night show at the rogue Island comedy festival. in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Can you believe that? So a lot of good things coming up. Very excited. Now, I was also excited this past weekend to watch SNL, uh, you know, just because I wanted to see, you know, they brought back some of the old timers.
Uh, Meyer Rudolph was back to play Kamala Harris and, uh, Jim Gaffigan played her VP and, you know, I mean, they, I mean, and they had, uh, what's the other guy? I mean, you just, when the show I'm not saying, you know, I think it's, It's tired, tiring to say, Oh, SNL is not good anymore. It's just, there's just so much competition out there.
There's so much good TV out there that no one's waiting for SNL to come on on a Saturday night. You know what I mean? But either way, it was good to see the legends, uh, kind of help open that show. And you know, it's, it's kind of become iconic to see who's going to play who and Maya, of course. I mean, how good for her career.
You know what I mean? I don't know. No offense to Maya Rudolph, but I don't think her. Phone's been ringing off the hook. I'm sure, you know, it's fine, but you know, now it's like she can play Kamala and Jim Gaffigan was there to play Tim Walz. Did I say that already? Uh, so crazy stuff indeed. Um, and, uh, as far as was the episode good, I don't know.
I mean, whatever, but Dana Carvey was there and that's all that matters. Oh, and Jelly Roll. So if you haven't caught that, you can catch that on Hulu. And the other thing that I watched, I'll say one more over the weekend, which I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not, was the new Will Ferrell. In Harper Steel documentary, it's called Will and Harper.
Now, Will Ferrell, um, in Harper Steel, it's about his friend, Harper, who is transgender, and she was a man and was also one of SNL when they started years ago, so there's a lot of SNL that come into play here, Will Forte and Tina Fey and Molly Shannon and a whole bunch of people. Uh, and they all, Lauren Michaels, and they kind of discuss, you know, just the changes in the movie.
The documentary is them going across the country and just doing a road trip. And I, at first I was like, wow, this is kind of like insulting to people that don't live on the coast. Like, oh, they can't handle seeing a trans woman. But the truth is, is that when you're on a road trip, you're really rubbing elbows with people and they go to seedy bars and random like stock car rallies and things and I have to say, even though I was kind of like, Oh, is this movie going to be interesting?
Just driving across the country. I have to say some of the conversations they have. You know, with Will Ferrell being this, like, lovable celebrity and then sharing the comment section of people wondering who's this trans woman he's with. I actually found it pretty interesting and very emotional in a good way.
I think what it just goes to show and remind everyone is, when you get off the internet, when you get away from the mean people in the comment sections, people are genuinely, for the most part, Good people. Now. Yeah. Are there crazy people out there with road rage and issues? And yes, they're always going to exist.
But you know, like I've always said a million times, Einstein's favorite quote was the question you have to ask yourself, do I live in a friendly world or an unfriendly world? And it looks like Will Ferrell and Harper still live in a friendly world because, and I get it. Will Ferrell's a psycho. Celebrity.
So they had the benefit of having some celebrity status as they traveled across the country. But what I found interesting was this isn't the fear-based rhetoric. Oh, they're trying to turn your 7-year-old trans. This was just a man in his sixties, uh, that decided to transition into a woman because he felt that way all along.
Is that the craziest thing in the world? Is that the craziest thing in the world? No, I don't think so. And, but you know, not everyone's exposed to that type of story. So I think empathy is built when you get to see and witness new opportunities that you might not otherwise have known how you would react in.
And I think this movie does a really good job of just, Bringing people together. We need more of that in our worlds. Now, you know, you might think I'm polarizing with my political views, but the last thing in the world I ever want to do is, is push anybody away. In fact, all of my views are to bring people in, to help each other out, to, you know, be able to help moms out when they have kids or when someone gets sick, unexpectedly help them out, you know, help somebody so that they're not getting ripped off by their bosses.
I mean, that's all I want in life is for us to be able to help each other in a world where. Some people want us divided. How about more of that? All right. Well, we ran a little long, but that's okay. There's just so much to get into. We'll have to cover it all in the next episode this afternoon. In the meantime, I'll have some YouTube for you.
