Welcome to the Rush Hour, your daily dose of pop culture for your Rush Hour ride. Buckle up and enjoy the drive with your host, stand up comedian, Dave Neal. Good morning, everybody out there on this Tuesday, October 8th, 2024, and let's get into all of your pop culture news. On today's episode of The Morning Rush, we've got updates on the new hurricane heading for for Florida Milton, a viral clip shows a long time South Floridian meteorologist brought to tears in anticipation of the devastation.
Plus Taylor Swift was back on Monday night supporting the chiefs and golden bachelorette Joan tells us a few things she's learned in her sixties. Plus a slew of political leaders in the South come forward to fight the misinformation about the hurricane Helene cleanup. Plus a couple of gals were booted off a spirit airlines flight for wearing crop tops.
I've also got quick dancing with the stars recap and so much more. All of this coming up next on the morning rush. Folks. We have a very serious hurricane approaching Florida right now. And I want to share a clip with you yesterday. John Morales from NBC affiliate WTVJ was sharing an update. On Milton when he got choked up.
Have a listen. It's just an incredible, incredible, incredible hurricane. Uh, it has dropped,
it has dropped 50 millibars in 10 hours. Um, I apologize. This is just horrific. Um, winds, maximum sustained winds are 160 miles per hour. And, um, It, uh, it is just, uh, gaining strength in the Gulf of Mexico where you can imagine, uh, the winds, I mean, the seas are just so. Incredibly, incredibly hot, a record hot, as you might imagine, you know, what's driving that I don't need to tell you global warming, climate change, uh, leading to this and becoming an increasing threat, uh, for, uh, the Yucatan, uh, including Merida and Progreso and other areas there.
Uh, let's see if I can show you. So it shows the path which is heading directly for the western coast of Florida. And look, this is scary. The hurricane's supposed to brush by where I had my wedding two years ago, mid October. Hurricanes aren't supposed to be around this late in the season. They're starting earlier, they're going later.
And they're getting stronger and there's only been two category. There's only been several category five hurricanes to ever even come out of this area. So look, I'm not a meteorologist. I don't think it's, I don't think it's a political conversation at all that, uh, that there is a sort of man made global warming and just the.
Trajectories of these. I mean, the last storm went inland in, into areas that hurricanes have never even affected. So lots of warnings of evacuation. Here is Rianne Ramirez on TikTok explaining the chaos trying to evacuate from Tampa. 60 miles in four hours. Think about that. It's taken us four hours to go 60 miles.
If you are a Florida resident and you are evacuating for this, This huge, huge hurricane, Hurricane Milton, that's about to slam right into the West Coast of Florida. And you told yourself, it's okay, we'll wait till Tuesday morning, Tuesday night. Don't do it. Leave now because these interstates are insane.
All right, folks. So you heard the message here. This is important stuff that we share with our audience. We'll get into some of the. I don't know more trivial pop culture. You know what? What do you want me to speckle in some more trivial pop culture for you? Let's do that right now. Uh, P Diddy's, uh, going to be having to give his, uh, Miami beach key to the city back.
How about that? All right, let's go to sources with direct knowledge. Say Miami beach. City officials are in the final negotiations. To rescind Diddy's key to the city. Well, if he doesn't give it back, you could just have the locks changed into this metaphorical key. That doesn't actually do anything. Uh, but either way, look, uh, you know, I get it.
Some people say, Oh, Dave, less political, more of this. We got four weeks left before the election. So. Everything in the news is going to be political in one way or another. That's just the way it's going to be. And then after that, maybe it'll calm down, but the rhetoric's absolutely insane out there. We've got natural disasters that are affecting our audience and are affecting our country.
And it shouldn't be political. Here is Tampa mayor, Jane Caster, speaking with CNN about the challenges her city faces as hurricane Milton approaches. We're just asking people to go to a reliable source and our communications department in the city of Tampa does an amazing job of keeping our residents informed, uh, with factual information and the information that they need, not only to prepare.
Uh, but to evacuate and to ensure that they're keeping themselves and their families safe. The Tampa Bay region was becoming somewhat complacent, but Helene really woke everyone up and Milton is on a whole other, uh, plane. And look, I get it. You know, I actually have family that build marinas and they build, um, docks that are supposed to withstand these hurricanes.
And so I've got family that live on the coast in the area affected. And I've got a, you know, I've got a, uh, a sister in law that was without power for a long time. So, you know, we've all, we've all got somebody who's affected at the very least, we want everyone to get the accurate news and so. You know, at times like these are just ripe for people to make things up.
And so, uh, fear and so division. So here's CBS morning, uh, cleaning up, uh, I guess not just the North Carolina coast, but also the misinformation out there. is claimed by national figures that are just plain false, according to local reps from both parties. Among them is this one. The FAA is restricting search and rescue operations.
That is simply not happening. Another one, FEMA is too broke to help because the storm money is going to immigration problems and, and foreign wars. That's not how funding for FEMA works. Senator Tom Tillis confirmed as much on Face the Nation yesterday, and another local Republican called it all, quote, conspiracy theory junk.
But here's one of the sources of that junk.
And that's not the only quote. Now, so just imagine if you've lost your home, And then you hear that. How's it going to make you feel? Alright, so obviously it's tough out there when you have the right information. But I've never even, I've never seen this happen before. Where so many different leaders in different, uh, uh, political parties, both, uh, the Democrats and the Republicans, they're all saying the same thing, which is that we're trying our best, we're working around the clock to get, you know, Uh, you know, the, the right resources allocated in the right direction.
Here's governor Harry McMaster warning against misinformation. Again, I've never seen this before. I've absolutely never seen this many, uh, you know, elected officials coming forward, just warning people to get their news from a trusted source. Yes. People not to, not to listen to rumors. Don't get your information from these.
unofficial sources because 99 percent of the time they're wrong. You know, a couple of them that were circulating recently and causing fear and concern among people in Columbia, and that is that the Columbia water system was going out the wastewater as well as the drinking water. Well, none of that's true.
It was stated that everyone was evacuating the facility and all that. And I think the mayor and Others had a press conference earlier today to knock down those rumors. I spoke to the mayor a minute ago. He says he thinks they got those rumors knocked down, but there'll be another one coming right behind it before long.
So please get your information from official sources. I mean, how sweet and kind is this and sad at the same time that the governor of South Carolina has to come forward and tell people to be careful where they get, where they're getting their information from. It's, it's mayors and governors and it's like enough is enough.
You know, uh, and it's like, look, the government shouldn't have control over the social media, but we, as the consumers need to do a better job, not sharing information that is not accurate and vetted. Um, here is representative Jeff Jackson giving an update on all of the debunking going on. And let's address some specific rumors.
No one's land is being taken by FEMA. FEMA doesn't even have the authority to do that. Why is this even a rumor? There's no blockade on private aid. There is an enormous amount of private aid rolling in. The only people being turned away are the ones headed down a road that's been destroyed, and a checkpoint is telling them, don't go that way, the road has been destroyed.
If you want to bring in a private plane full of supplies, you can do that. The only issue is, there's now triple the normal amount of air traffic because of all the planes bringing in supplies and there have been a bunch of near misses in the air, so they're just asking folks, Get in touch with the emergency operations center.
Let them know you're coming and the FAA will clear you to land. I mean this sounds so reasonable. Here we have a country divided where our common enemy right now should be the hurricane and the relief of that hurricane. We should be linking arms as we recover and yet Social media has divided us so much that we're fighting over such trivial things.
Finally, finally, uh, and again, we'll go to a break after this. I want to share with you, uh, Mike Johnson, he's using the hurricane, uh, victims as political pawns. There's really no other way about it. Here he is on Fox news Sunday, speaking about why he will not bring Congress back to vote on more funding until wait for it.
After the election. I mean, these guys are just telling on themselves. President Biden has said more money is needed. He actually sent a letter to congressional leaders on Friday night, including you. And he said specifically, the small business administration is in real trouble. Here's what he says. I warned the Congress of this potential shortfall even before Hurricane Helene landed on America's shores.
I requested more funding for SBA multiple times over the summer. It's past several months. And most recently, my administration underscored that request as you prepared a continuing resolution to fund the government. Will you call Congress back before the election? Do you need to? Look, we'll be back in session immediately after the election, that's 30 days from now.
The thing about these hurricanes and disasters of this magnitude is that it takes a while to calculate the actual damages. And the states are going to need some time to do that. So rather than bring Congress and get them off their asses to come back and vote for more relief for the, you know, for FEMA, they're saying, well, wait till after the election, because why that's going to change the amount of money.
Like it's, it's, it's sickening. And I think surgically. We need to vote out anybody who's politicizing the response to a natural disaster. Absolute sickening. We'll be back with some more content right after this. And look folks, I'm, I promise you this, I'm not trying to give you too much heavy content.
It's just, this is really important stuff for all of us. That we don't share misinformation and that we don't, uh, share half truths. Like, we have to be impeccable with our word in times like this. And make sure that we aren't part of the problem of division. Thanks Uh, Kanye, speaking of division, Kanye West and Bianca sensory marriage on the rocks divorce on the horizon, which by the way, I feel like this whole time she's been held hostage.
You know what I mean? Uh, who knows? Uh, but, uh, multiple sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ yay. And Bianca have been telling people around them. They split up a few weeks ago with the Yeezy architect heading down to Australia to spend time with her family. Since the split while there's no word on what prompted the split or who pulled the rug on the relationship We're told Kanye has been telling people close to him.
He plans to live in Tokyo and divorce her. All right Well, hey good for him. What the hell do I care? In other news. Oh, let's let's do a little palate cleanser. Here is our good pal Joan Vasso's the Golden Bachelorette Discussing the three things she will not do in her 60s. Have a listen Things that I will not do now that I'm in my 60s.
I don't gossip anymore. Nothing good ever comes of it. Find better things to talk about. The second thing is compare myself to other people. There's always going to be somebody smarter or prettier or more successful. Just makes you feel bad about yourself. And the third thing is, and this is very superficial, I will not sleep on bad sheets and I will not Alright, for the record, she bleeped that third one, not me.
Joan, tell us! What's the third one? We have to know! What did you bleep out? Alright, well let's go to the crop top controversy. A Southern California woman and her friend claim they were kicked off a Spirit Airlines flight for wearing crop tops. Well, the first problem here is that they were on a Spirit Airlines flight, but let's listen to what they had to say.
It's a crop top controversy. Oh, the news! It's a crop top controversy. Nobody talks like that going viral. A male flight attendant came up to us and aggressively said, mumbled, put something on. The women took this video before boarding, showing they had sweaters but removed them, saying the plane did not have air conditioning before takeoff.
Telling both of us put our fighters on. And then we're like, oh, can we see a dress code? Carla Hager, a woman they did not know was sitting in front of them. I also have a crop top under my sweater and I took my sweater off and I was like, so if they're kicking you off the flight, then they're also going to have to kick me and my toddler off of the flight.
But that's what happened. The three women and a toddler kicked off the Spirit Airlines plane with no refund. A statement from the company said Our contract of carriage, a document all guests agree to upon making a reservation with us, includes certain clothing standards for all guests traveling with us.
We are investigating the matter and we are in contact with the guests about their experience. Jeez, this is ridiculous. First of all, when I search travel, the first thing I do uncheck Spirit Airlines. I'm telling you this for those that say, I have no problem flying them. You will get bent over sideways.
If it hasn't happened yet, you are on borrowed time. This airline is, uh, atrocious. I won't do it. I don't care how cheap they say their flights are. Nope, uh, there's no such thing as a free lunch. It always comes at a cost. And you know what? Maybe also it's the cost of, uh, you know, lower, lower cost tickets leads to shenanigans because everyone just feels like they're on a city bus.
I mean, what do I know? I don't know. You know who I want in my life? I want a brother like Jason Kelsey. Now he's retired from professional football, but he was there covering Monday night football with Travis Kelsey on the field. Here's what he had to say about his younger brother and his slow start to the NFL season.
He is always going to find a way to make football the number one priority in terms of being prepared. There's so many things that rely on this between his relationship with his teammates in Reed and his legacy. So I know it's been a slow start for him. I know that the optics have certainly appeared that way.
Uh, to a, look at that. Now she's got the part on right there. That looks good. My, uh, Travis always good. Just find a way to show up and show out. And I think it's only a matter of time before it gets back to the Travis Kelsey we've seen. So what he was saying there was they cut to Taylor Swift arriving at the stadium.
As you know, she took a few weeks off to some other, uh, you know, she had some other, uh, I guess, uh, things going on there, but now she's back. The chiefs won. It looks like Travis Kelsey had a pretty decent game. So all is right in the world. All right. Well, we'll see. So, uh, dancing with the stars was last night.
I don't know what you guys thought about it, but as far as dancing with the stars goes, I'm absolutely loving this season. Joey Grazia day, the bachelor did great. I mean, Hey Jen, Jen trans doing great too, but Joey Grazia day is doing really, really well. And bachelors don't usually perform well.
Bachelorettes have won the trophy and they've been top finalists, but, uh, we really have a lot of stiff competition, but I have to say. I'm really rooting for Chandler Kinney. I mean, she was absolutely fantastic. She was the first to get a full set of nines last night and I didn't know, I've never watched her on anything.
She was on pretty little liars, uh, or I should say lethal weapon. The pretty little liars revival series, zombies, you know, Disney shows, things I don't know about, but she's absolutely fantastic. I think. She's been on the leaderboard every single week. Brooks Nader, of course, is getting sultry as she's having sort of a show mance with her pro partner, Gleb Savchenko.
Um, and again, I love, I love the pommel horse, Prince Steven Nadorozik. But I got to tell you, he's, he's, he's pretty stiff. I mean, look, you don't get to the Olympics without a very hard and strong work ethic. So folks like Danny Amendola, Superbowl champions, Steven Adorozik, you expect them to continue to improve a lot during the show.
Uh, but you know, how much time does he have left to improve? That's the question, you know, uh, is his fan base big enough to keep him performing for several more weeks while he kind of gets out of his own way as it We'll have to see. But either way, I'm loving this season. I'm loving the diversity of choices from, uh, Carl Winslow on family matters to Olympians to four, you know, other athletes and, uh, in actors we've never heard of.
So anyway, good stuff. My, my recap though, I am all in on Chandler Kinney. I'm all in on her. I know I'm attached. I'm on attaching myself to the best one out there, but Hey, I mean, you gotta love a winner, right? All right. So speaking of loving a winner, we've got Gabby, uh, wind, uh, Wendy, is that his name? Is that your name?
Oh my gosh. Gabby. Wendy talked about her experience on the dancing with the stars tour. Here she complains about the sleeping conditions. I went on tour with dancing with the stars. Well, And I will not shut the fuck up about it, because it was the worst thing I've ever done. I think, I mean, that doesn't really sound awesome.
Yeah, so wait, can you please, uh, fill me in on the insides and outs of that? Yeah. The insides were a decrepit tour bus. Um, we were sharing, there was like 12 of us and I think there was like 10 bunks. At one point people were sleeping on the floor, which that is a liability, but what's done is done. Yeah, I mean, yeah.
What network is this always? Anyway, so Gabby, not a fan. So I do not think she'll be invited back for a future tour, but, uh, either way, what can you do? She made a, what a couple hundred thousand dollars dancing, got paid some more to go do it on a tour bus and Hey, no complaints from me. I'll do it for you.
I'll take her spot. I'll do some Paso Doble. All right. Well, let's take a quick break and we've got some more content coming right after this. All right. We have Sally Field making headlines. She actually discussed, uh, as a teenager, she had an illegal abortion and it was traumatic. Uh, she, uh, discusses what it was like to get pregnant at the age of 17 in the 1950s.
Share this on her Instagram stories. Have a listen. I feel still very shamed about it because I was raised in the fifties and you know, I, it's, it's ingrained in me. Uh, um, and I was 17. Uh, I had no choices in my life. I didn't have a, a lot of family support in any way, uh, or, or finances. I, I graduated from high school, but had no, no one ever said, go, how about college?
How about, you know, I, nothing, I didn't know what was going to be. And then I, I, I found out I was pregnant. Luckily, I had a family doctor who was a friend of the family and, uh, he drove me and his wife and my mother in their brand new Cadillac, ay yay yay, um, to Tijuana. And I what we parked on a on a really scrunchy looking street scary and he parked about three blocks away and said see that building down there and he gave me an envelope with money and with cash and I was to walk into that building and give them the cash and then come right back to him and I guess he thought if I were dying maybe he could help me and it was it was it was beyond hideous and, and, uh, you know, life altering.
Um, I had no anesthetic. Um, there was a technician giving me a few puffs of ether, but he would then take it away. So it just made my arms and legs feel numb and weird, but I felt everything, um, how much pain I was in. And then I realized that the technician was actually molesting me. So I had to figure out how can I make my.
arms moved to push him away. And, uh, you know, so it was just, you know, this absolute pit of shame. And, and I, um, then when it was finished, they said, go, go, go, go, go. Like, like the building was on fire and they didn't want me there. You know, it It was illegal, you know. Wow. Oh my gosh, my jaws on the floor listening to that.
Uh, that was absolutely wild to hear her experience from 70 years ago. Is that right? How, 60 years ago? I mean, this is absolutely insanity, uh, that she's able to recall this story with as much sort of pain and shame as she felt, uh, on the day. What tragic stuff. And, um, you know, I think about how many people in today's modern world of 2024 might have to do something similar.
Wild times out there, and Fox News actually interviewed Melania Trump as her new book's coming out. Uh, as Melania Trump basically came out as pro choice. Melania, you also write about abortion in the book. You write about That you are staunchly for a woman's right to choose, you are pro choice. You write, it is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference in having children based on their own convictions, free from intervention or pressure.
From government. Had you spoken to President Trump about that before you wrote that in the book? Yes. He knew my position and my beliefs since the day we met. Uh, and, uh, I believe in, uh, individual freedom. I want to decide. What I wanted to do with my body. I think, um, I don't want government in my personal business.
That she disagrees with a major policy initiative that her husband has passed. So wild times indeed, folks, uh, and a lot of people, you know, they go, well, Dave, if you couldn't, you know, why do you, why do you making things political? Well, the former president was a reality TV star. He married a model. Uh, the, the conversations around all of the podcasters, who's supporting him, who's supporting her.
It's just absolutely wild. Now. A lot of people have posted how many instagram followers, uh that Alex cooper lost since uh announcing her interview of vice president kamala harris And with what several million followers she lost About 5, 000, which is essentially like nothing. It's less than a percentage.
Right. Uh, which is very interesting. It's interesting when you think of the vocal minority, the squeaky wheel that gets the grease, we, uh, regardless of political ideology, whether it's, you know, the left or the right, a lot of times we feel beholden to these loud voices. And what we have to remember is.
Just do what you feel is right, and the loud voices will be loud as they exit, but your real fans, your real supporters, they will be there. So, I, I, I get some of your DMs, and again, it's, it's very rare, but there are people that are saying, Oh my gosh, I can't stand it with blah, blah, blah, and blah, blah, blah, and to that I just have to say, well, you are allowed to go on your day.
And I'm just going to try to just try to share with as much love as possible. What I'm doing over here. It doesn't have to be for everybody and y'all don't have to agree with me. I was listening to a Joe Rogan episode, uh, the other day where he said like 17 things that I thought were patently false, wrong misinformation, but you know, I don't take what everyone says.
As, as the be all end all. So for those that enjoy what we do over here, I do appreciate you. I am here in all that love. Just do me a solid. If you haven't already, if there's ever a time to motivate you to leave a nice five star review, it is now, uh, to double down on the algorithm and double down on those that enjoy what we're doing.
