Welcome to the rush hour, your daily dose of pop culture for your rush hour ride. Buckle up and enjoy the drive with your host, stand up comedian, Dave Neal. Good afternoon, everybody on this Tuesday, October 8th, 2024. We've got all of your entertainment and pop culture news in one place, and we'll have an update on Hurricane Milton.

As Tampa residents continue to evacuate, it should make landfall tomorrow night. Plus some tips on how to increase your luck. And we've also got our first football season firing. This season has barely started in the head coach has been let go. And also Taylor Swift can change a small business owner's life in one quick moment.

I'll share the story of how that went down and bachelor. Joey's acts gives him flowers metaphorically for how well he is dancing on the current season of dancing with the stars. And in a touching moment, it's revealed that Richard Simmons was buried in his iconic workout gear. I'll explain why and every other story coming your way next on the Afternoon Rush.

Well, safety first. So before we get to all of your pop culture news, let's start with some Hurricane Milton updates. Uh, Florida is on high alert. Here's the current update from the Weather Channel. As fast as any storm that we've had in the modern satellite era. Uh, what they usually say, Tony, is 30 knots in 24 hours is what we call rapid intensification.

We had nearly triple that if it puts it into perspective. So that's the problem. You've got a monster out there which is going to go through meteorological changes in the center, but it is going to get bigger in terms of its wind field. And that's the most important takeaway. All the water and waves it's pushing is going to continue to do so here as we see approach probably Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

So let's talk about that water and waves storm surge of 10, maybe even 15 feet. Can you put that in some kind of context that people can comprehend? Yeah, I'm up here by Tampa General. This is one of the lowest parts of Tampa Bay. Uh, I'm well underwater at 10 to 15 feet. If you see that bridge over there that goes across to the convention center, um, basically we're talking about water pretty much on the top of that road.

All right. So they're already showing the damage that will be done. And I have to say, you know, I go on Instagram, looking for clips to share with you guys for the podcast, as I like to curate a interesting show every morning and afternoon. And I'm seeing people going viral already that live in the Tampa area that are saying we're not leaving.

And this is what we're doing to prepare for the storm. So. Obviously, those clips are going viral for the worst way possible because people want to see, like, you know, in one way they want to root them on, like, we want to see how you're going to do, but how crazy that the world of entertainment is brought into natural disasters in this way.

Well, the mayor of Tampa is not mincing her words. She says, if you stick around, you could die. What would you say to people tonight who are saying, you know what, I'm going to ride this out, I've ridden others out. What would you say to people who aren't heeding those evacuation orders? Uh, well, I can tell you right now that, uh, they may have done that in others.

There's never been one like this. And this Helene, Helene was a wake up call. Uh, this is literally catastrophic. And I can say without any dramatization whatsoever, if you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you're going to die. Geez. Wow. I mean, that is an incredibly blunt message. And, and I know.

You have a lot of experience dealing with these storms. You don't say something like that lightly, Mayor. I've never said that. And 10 to 12 ft surge. I mean, if this takes a job to the south, that's going to save us from the storm surge. But it stays on the track that it's projected to be on right now, or if it goes a bit north would be even worse.

Alright, so not looking good. Look, and I understand why some people don't want to evacuate, they have nowhere to go to. Whenever there's an evacuation order, like we live in the richest country in the world, at least we're supposed to, right? And I say that because we need federal funds ready to go into people's bank accounts.

I mean, it should be that if you're in an evac, evacuation zone. You just are given a voucher to go stay at a hotel for a little bit of time. You know, uh, when I lived in California during the Malibu wildfires, a lot of people were displaced from Malibu to Santa Monica, just a few towns over. And I met a lot of these folks and they were staying in hotels and they were just hoping their insurance was going to cover it.

And that's what I just hate about Some of the ways that the business side of our economy works is that we rely on insurance companies and then they don't want to pay out. And then people get skeptical and they're like, I don't even want to leave town. And then you've got, you know, the weather channel and you know, in the different weather programs, kind of boy who cried wolf, right?

Because a lot of times they, they, their ratings go through the roof whenever there's a storm coming. So in some cases it'll hype the storm up and then it'll be a dud and they're saying, no, no, no, this is the real one folks. And then some people are saying, yeah, sure. We'll see when we believe it. And, um, you know, sadly we'll be here to cover it, but, um, it's looking pretty scary out there.

We'll have more on some of the. Hurricane relief, uh, coming in a little bit, but here's a breaking news moment from the, uh, from when jets fired Robert. Is it sailor? I might be pronouncing that wrong. The head coach. Now they're not even the worst team in the division that goes to my new England Patriots, right?

But the jets are not doing as well as they should have. And here's the moment on first take where they realized he was fired. We got to stop you right there. We got breaking news. We got breaking news. Yeah. Uh, it's obviously happening in real time. Breaking news into first take that Robert Sala, the Jets head coach has been fired.

I'll get you more details as they come in, but yes, Robert Sala again, the New York Jets head coach fired. Obviously they had a tough loss across the pond against the Bills at two and three record. Stephen A, your reaction. Oh, roll it. Roll the tape. Shannon, didn't I say about a week or two weeks ago, I don't know if he's going to make it through the season.

I mean, listen, when you look. At how the defense, first of all, the defense was obviously good, but there were times when we saw they were struggling a little bit. And then Robert Sala seemed to have. No control over the team itself. The office was being run by Aaron Rodgers. You had, and we saw Aaron Rodgers had a fight, uh, you know, an arguing match with him earlier.

And when you're a star quarterback like that, your job's not going to be lost. It's the coaches, very interesting stuff. Now. And in more sad news in the world of NFL, we actually covered this, I think yesterday, one of the star, the captain of the Patriots defense was arrested and the charges were absolutely crazy.

He was charged with domestic violence on his girlfriend. She claimed that he pushed her down the stairs and did all these crazy things. Um, He has a completely different story. Now he was arrested. Um, he says she went off on him because he wouldn't have unprotected sex with her. Well, now his attorney is speaking out.

His name is Jabril Peppers. The attorney says, what I said in the courtroom, I'll repeat. We have evidence that completely contradicts the alleged victim story. And I expect my client to be fully exonerated. The reporter said it was video evidence. And he said, yes. And other evidence as well. Look, I don't know what the evidence is, but I can tell you this.

Because I'm in, I'm shopping for home security systems right now, uh, because you got, you know, you know, I've been under threat, um, as I've been harassed by, um, Laura Owens, uh, with my coverage of the Bachelor Clayton Eckerd, uh, paternity case, as you guys know, she knows my address and she's sent processing servers to my house, or at least paid to send a processor.

Processing server to my house to serve me restraining orders papers. Of course, uh, she later found out. And I later found out those were denied due to first amendment rights as I've done my due diligence and done my job as a reporter. But the point is, is that you never know what type of craziness might exist out there.

And when, when you run your business, you know, people can find out where you live and it's the whole thing. So for me, I'm not only. You know, uh, upping my surveillance on the outside of my house, but the inside of my house as well. Now again, I'm not saying that Jabril Peppers is innocent or guilty. I have no idea with regards to this story.

But if I was him, I mean a ring cam footage inside your house. Now you're not supposed to be able to, um, you're not supposed to be able to tape Uh, to, to have video evidence of, um, uh, you know, of someone without their consent, you know, if you're doing, doing something like, you know, hooking up or whatever, I don't know the rules behind that, but just in the off chance that someone might make a false accusation against you now, in my world, that would never happen.

You kidding me? What are you talking about? I'm happily married, living in my house, but someone like Jabril peppers, if you're a, if you're someone who's a millionaire athlete and you're meeting people, God knows how there could be a chance where someone, you know, Tells a lie about you and it's your word versus them.

I'm not saying that's the case here. I have no idea what the case is, but for his lawyer to say that they fully expect him to be exonerated, interesting stuff, but also we know lawyers speak up for their client. As we've seen with Laura Owens, her attorney has said the same thing. Oh, my client's innocent.

When we know. If actually she's done nothing but lies. So we'll have to see how this all plays out. But another, um, another tough, uh, tough blow for the new England Patriots and in otherwise abysmal season. All right. I have a happy NFL story involving Taylor Swift and a very, very, very happy small business owner.

I'll get to that right after a quick word from our sponsor. Well, Taylor Swift was at the Chiefs game last night, and she had glitter freckles on. And now we have a TikTok creator named, uh, Elliot Butts saying, how I know Taylor Swift is wearing my brand glitter freckles. She went viral crying when she saw that Taylor Swift was wearing her brand.

Well, why is that? Because that's a huge deal to have the biggest pop star of all time endorsing your brand of glitter freckles. I didn't know glitter freckles were a thing. And to be quite honest I didn't know how I lived my whole life without glitter freckles. Somebody send me a pair of these glitter freckles.

Here's what she had to say. My world has been rocked overnight. Last night, Taylor Swift wore my brand Faze. It's glitter freckles to the chiefs game and everything has changed. Let's say I didn't sleep at all last night. But we keep getting this question, how do we know they're our brand? And obviously like when you're the founder and you put like your love, your heart, your sweat and tears into building a product, you can identify that's your baby.

But we also sent to her makeup artist, Lori Turk, Back in the spring when we first launched our makeup patches in April, I actually made a TikTok about this, that it was my goal to get them on Taylor Swift. Like I was going to do everything and find a way. So I reached out to Lori Turk's makeup artist agency and they provided her mailing address and we sent to her and like, obviously nothing happened and wasn't expecting anything to happen.

So not sure If, if that's how she found our products or maybe she bought them, we've had so many videos going viral on Tik Tok and on Instagram. So maybe like her team organically saw it, but this is, this is so unreal in the Swifty community is unbelievable. There it is. So she also shared a video of her just crying.

I don't know if it was her husband or boyfriend, whoever took the video, but it was of course a very powerful moment. You know, anyone who started a small business, you can imagine the struggles. That go into differentiating yourself from others. And, you know, it involves a lot of times an investment of your personal, uh, life savings and things like that.

So to see a story where the biggest pop star of all time is wearing your product, that's a moment where you go, we've, We've developed this. We have proof of concept and now we have trendsetters, uh, featuring it. So that is a good day for her. You know, maybe this is connective tissue. Maybe it's not, but I also pulled up this, uh, this clip from TED talks.

Which is the Ted Talks on TikTok. And here's a thought about how taking risks can increase your luck. I've spent nearly two decades observing what makes people luckier than others and trying to help people increase their luck. I got to tell you what, one way to increase your luck is to send Taylor Swift's makeup artist, your innovative.

Sparkly freckles. I gotta tell you. I mean, that's that increases the luck. You know, Taylor Swift doesn't come knocking on your door. You put the product near her. So how do you catch the winds of luck? It's easy, but it's not obvious. The first thing you want to do is to change your relationship with yourself.

Be willing to take small risks that get you out of your comfort zone. The second thing you want to do is to change your relationship with other people. You need to understand that everyone who helps you on your journey is playing a huge role in getting you to your goals. And if you don't show appreciation, not only are you not closing the loop, but you're missing an opportunity.

And third, you want to change your relationship with ideas. Most people look at new ideas that come their way and they judge them. That's a great idea or that's a terrible idea. But it's actually much more nuanced. Ideas are neither good and bad. And in fact, in the seeds of terrible ideas are often something truly remarkable.

Yes, sometimes people were born into terrible circumstances and sometimes luck is a lightning bolt that hits us with something wonderful or something terrible. But the winds of luck. Are always there. And if you're willing to take some risks, if you're willing. To really go out and show appreciation and you're willing to really look at ideas, even if they're crazy through the lens of possibilities, you build a bigger and bigger sale to catch the winds of luck.

Amazing stuff, right? I've, I've always said the Eastern mantra, which is leap in the net will appear. And that being that when you take chances in life, you will see the world conspire to help you with those chances. And luck is the same way. So looking at luck visually as wind. Uh, and, and, and, and in one way, increasing the effectiveness of that wind by building sales.

I mean, that's like, if you knew it was going to be windy outside, you planted a wind farm, you know, you had, uh, you had the, uh, turbines ready to go to harness that energy of luck. And, you know, that's kind of what happened on my channel to be quite honest during the pandemic. I, I, I started getting more aggressive in the amount of content I was creating.

And as stories came about, I became the first one to cover those stories. The algorithm started picking it up because I was like the main guy and I was becoming trustworthy to YouTube so that when big stories hit, I was full time. I actually went full time two months before the biggest story that ever hit bachelor nation, the Chris Harrison sort of firing and the Matt James story.

So by the time that came out, I was already doing full time news. And. You know, you can wait and say, all right, well, now that there's a big story, I might as well start making content. But I just had this sort of lightning bolt moment happened to me, which was that I realized let's do this full time. And then when the stories come, I will be sort of the voice that is here covering it.

And you can apply that to whatever you're doing in life, but from glitter freckles to YouTube content, you got to make the thing you got to believe in yourself and then. Like I said, the, the net will appear the safety net that kind of catches you and leads you to the direction of your dreams. I truly believe that.

I mean, if I wasn't living in that world of abundance, would I have the sponsor? I'm about to read it is via my new favorite adult gummy back to school, sadness, creeping in the kids have to go to school. And what do you love to do at home? Papa via, uh, they've got so many different options for you to embrace life.

Uh, you, uh, my favorite right now is actually the, the focus one, which is THC free. It's just CBD and lion's mane, but the Viya company is dedicated to harnessing the natural benefits of hemp to create high quality wellness products from setting the mood in the bedroom. That's right. They have a bedroom version to chilling out after a long day.

Viya has something for you. Award winning THC and THC free gummies. Viya has a dosage to encourage your comfort. After you purchase, they ask you where you heard about them.

Please support our show and tell them that the rush hour podcast sent you. Enhance your every day with Viya and you can try Viya Hemp, uh, again, code rush hour. All right. So, uh, now that we got some of the business underway, uh, we got all your NFL news there. Uh, there's a couple other stories, uh, that we wanted to jump into.

Oh, I mentioned this earlier. Richard Simmons was buried in his iconic workout gear. So he can, quote, help the angels get into shape, his brothers say. The fitness icon died at 76 on July 13th of complications from recent falls and heart disease. How nice is that? Just like Clark Kent underneath his beautiful things that he was wearing, his clothing, Richard is wearing a tank top and shorts.

Uh, Lenny told the crowd, E. W. confirmed with Richard Simmons representative. Why, you ask? Because we think that God has another plan for him. And we want to make sure that he was going to be in his normal costume that we all know and love. To help the saints and the angels get into shape. You know, to some people on the outside, this might seem hokey or whatever, but to those that Knew Richard Simmons and followed his workout programs and all the positivity he shared.

I think it's a very special moment to, to look at a man who, who, I don't know if he was completely understood in his latter years, he was kind of became reclusive, but he was a guy that always was trying to increase the energy in the room. So good on him for that. Now Olivia Rodrigo is in the news. She's donating all ticket sales profits from her Philippines concert.

She reached a major career milestone over the weekend after she played for the largest audience ever and is also giving back to the community that means a lot to her. The pop star traveled to the Philippines as part of her Guts World Tour to play at the massive Philippine Arena in Manila. The venue is the largest indoor arena in the world and holds 55, 000 people.

She is part Filipina and is proudly spoken of her heritage and shared a sweet message on Instagram after the show, expressing her gratitude for the fans in Manila and announced that all profits from ticket sales will be donated. So good for her. You know, a lot of times artists say, Hey, We make our money not because of what we do on stage, but because of what we have to do to get on stage, you know, with standup comedy.

It's like, I love performing. I performed for, I think, 25 bucks in New York. That's all I made, you know, probably cost me 5, 000 on that trip, but we love, we love to perform and anything you can do to get into the position to perform is great. So for her to be able to give that money away to the people that believe in her, no surprises there whatsoever.

All right. Well, artists have really done outdone themselves. An elevator mechanic mistakes artwork for trash and throws it out. We hear, we hear this story all the time. An elevator mechanic mistakenly threw out a piece of artwork made to look like empty beer cans, assuming it was litter, a Dutch museum revealed earlier this month.

Well, why were you, you know what I mean? Was it artwork or was it, uh, was it, did someone drink some beers at the, you know what I mean? The theme of our art collection is food and consumption. We let you look at everyday things in a special way through art, by presenting the works of art differently, that effect is increased.

You're surprised time and time again. I mean, well, let me contribute to the artwork and I'll leave you some of my McDonald's wrappers. You know what I mean? You know, that greasy wax paper from the biscuit, bacon, egg, and cheese you ate. How bizarre. All right. Well, I've got an airline apologizing for an R rated movie they played, which was not suitable for their crowd.

I'll have that story for you next. All right, we've all been in that situation where you're watching a movie with your parents and there's an impromptu sex scene that nobody knew about and then you feel so awkward and no one wants to get up and say something and there's, you know, you know that moment?

Well, it happened on a Qantas flight. Uh, Qantas Airlines apologized to passengers on a recent flight from Sydney to Japan after playing the R rated 40 minutes of penis and boobs. Well, by all means, this is good promo for the movie. The movie was clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight, and we sincerely apologize to customers for this experience.

All screens were changed to a family friendly movie for the rest of the flight. Well, I have to say, yeah, was this, you know, I haven't been on an airline where they have, do you remember, oh, this is going to sound, I feel old. Do you remember airlines that had the little TV that was like every five rows, and depending on which row you got, Was whether you could see the TV or not, and everyone is forced to watch the same thing.

Oh, my gosh, have times changed. You're telling me Qantas Airways has those old airplanes that had the just random TV on. I always say this if it's the TV at every seat watch whatever the hell you want. Maybe you could put up a little divider or whatever if it gets kind of, uh, You know, I don't know, uh, graphic or whatnot, but I, I like to watch a good rated R movie on a flight.

I'm not caring if the kid behind me is peeking, uh, peeking a sneak or whatever, do whatever you got to do. You know what I mean? All right. Well, as promised, uh, I'm trying to keep the political political stuff for the end of the episode, but I do have a couple updates on the hurricane sort of relief.

Controversy is hitting here is, uh, Vice President Kamala Harris discussing why she contacted DeSantis regarding the relief efforts, but this is going to be different than they've been before. And I know a lot of folks might think I've been through this. I grew up here. I've seen it all. I'll be fine. This one is going to be different.

And that's why I called the governor about what Florida has received in terms of impact. We have to have an agreement that at some point. We, we all need to work together. So this idea that we all need to work together is great. And now we have Biden responding to some of the misinformation that he believes and other believes has been sowed as a way to hurt the current administration right before an election.

Sir, what's the risk of political figures sharing misinformation during this time? The past is prologue is real. The fact of the matter is I, I think we have, uh, I've been able to contact all the governors. They are sticking up for what they've asked for. They're pointing out that they're satisfied with everything they're getting.

Uh, but I can't speak for others on the internet. And I mean, it's just Look,

those who do it, do it to try to damage the administration. Well, that's, we take care of ourselves. But it misleads people, puts people in circumstances where they panic, where they're really, really, really worried, and they think they're not being taken care of. And it really is, it's going to sound, I'm using an old phrase, it's un American.

It really is. People are scared to death. People know their lives are at stake. All that they've worked for, all that they own, all that they value. And it's just, it's, it's just Anyway. So look, uh, you know, I know he's hard to listen to golly Biden. I mean, he is just really aged to be the guy, you know, they boost the audio.

You could barely hear what he's saying, but the point remains, it's so un American to take these natural disasters and make a political war out of it. Especially four weeks before an election, you're seeing, and again, people say, Oh, don't be political or biased. You're seeing across, uh, across, uh, networks, the sort of battling of the misinformation here.

We have on Fox news, um, a GOP rep French Hill, uh, responding to misinformation from Maria Bartiromo. You are an elected official, you know, where and how the money is spent. How is it possible that FEMA is out of money? Biden is urging Congress to come back, approve more funding for FEMA by the end of the year.

Uh, Vice President Harris still under fire for promising to send 157 million to Lebanon. Yeah, Lebanon. While residents of at least six states in America are struggling to recover from Hurricane Helene. Okay, you're watching pictures of them hanging from trees. They've lost everything because of these storm surges.

How is FEMA out of money? FEMA's not out of money, uh, and this was made clear by the Inspector General report saying that Mayorkas has, uh, access to nearly 8 billion of funding from the FEMA Disaster Relief Funds accumulated since 2012. Plus, as I've said and as Mike Johnson has said, Congress is ready to replenish that funding as soon as we get back to Washington.

They have the money. To take care of Florida, take care of North Carolina, take care of Georgia. And they need to get about delivering it and listening to what their governors are asking and meeting those governor's requests. But it's that money frozen for some reason? This is where the inspector general says no, Congress's staff says no, they have access to the funding.

All right. So that's the clip. And look, you know, this is. You know, federal funding is a social welfare program that when everyone complains about socialism, I think what they're not understanding is these social welfare programs are here to help people, whether it's because you battled an illness or because you were stuck in a catastrophe or because you're low income due to circumstances out of your control, where this is all here to help Americans to help our brothers and our sisters.

And. Uh, so far, DeSantis and everyone else has said that they've been approved for all of the money they've asked for. So I think that's a good thing. I think we're getting to see how the system works. Now, I gotta tell people, if you're in Florida listening to this, if you're in the path of the hurricane or an evacuation zone, please get out.

Please get out. If, um, If, uh, you know, you can't afford a hotel or whatever, create a GoFundMe, send it to me. We'll share it with our community. We just want everyone to be safe. Um, that's the least we can do is to try to keep our audience safe during this very, very wild time. Well, we've made it to the end.

That's going to do it for me. We'll be back in the morning as always. I'm Dave Neal and this is the rush.
