Welcome to the Rush Hour. Your daily dose of pop culture for your Rush Hour ride. Buckle up and enjoy the drive with your host, stand up comedian, Dave Neal. Hey everybody, good afternoon to you out there. Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024. And I got all your pop culture entertainment news in one place. On today's episode, we've got a breaking news engagement.
Bachelorette Michelle Young says yes to her partner. I'll have those details for you. Plus a suspension has been made for the. Texan player who drilled Trevor Lawrence and also the director of Wicked explains why he cast Ariana Grande When they were looking for an unknown and also wild story coming out of South Korea We're gonna break down this martial law situation They've got going over there plus it's day two of our single mom Appreciation wish list will feature our new mom today.
All those stories and more are coming up next on The Rush Well, it's the wee hours in the morning in Seoul, South Korea, and BBC reporter joined shocked protesters after South Korea's president declared an emergency martial law. The country's parliament has since voted to block the president's move, but the military have said it will maintain martial law until lifted by the president.
All right, this is a pretty wild story going on on the other side of the world. Here's the update. It's almost 2 a. m. in Seoul, and people are not going home. They want the National Assembly door open. They want the martial law lifted. And they want to know what's going to happen. Because the overwhelming mood here is one of incredulity.
I see some people also giggling because they cannot seem to believe that a martial law was declared. In this democracy. Yeah. And again, you know, in martial laws declared when control is centralized, oftentimes it doesn't go back. So we'll have to see as one of our big allies, what goes down there. And, you know, we are approaching the winter solstice, which means shortest days of the year, not much sunlight here is Huberman lab explaining on the Sean Ryan show, why it's important to get light in the morning.
We'll need to get their relationship. to light and darkness. Correct. This might sound silly, but getting enough sunlight early in the day, and yes, even when it's cloudy out, there's sunlight, and then keeping it dark at night, it doesn't have to be pitch black, has been shown additively to offset many of the negative effects of things like depression, OCD, ADHD.
Bipolar disorder. You're setting your physiology, right? This circadian, this 24 hour schedule that we're on is dictated by light through the eyes at particular times of day and darkness other times of day. The use of phones and screens, while fantastic, right, is disrupting our circadian schedules. Wait, you mean to tell me I shouldn't be on TikTok in my bed for two hours right before trying to go to sleep?
And health, in particular mental health. It's not just the content people are receiving on these devices, it's also the light itself. So get that right. It requires no cost, and it sets things in the right direction. People need to Well, I guess, look, hey, you could listen to the podcast! There's no light involved there, just put the podcast on.
You know, when I can't sleep, you know what I listen to? I listen to, uh, Bigfoot podcasts. I'm not kidding. I listen to Bigfoot podcasts where people share their Bigfoot stories, and they're always the most ridiculous stories. That's what gets me through the night. I don't know about you, but if you need to listen to my scratch I'll help you count sheep.
All right. Oh boy. Today is the day. Did you know this? There's a guy who developed an AI device that predicts, uh, different events in the world. It said that he predicted the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia. And now he says, hold on that. There'll be an alien invasion on December 3rd, 2024. That's today folks. Well.
I don't know. Will those aliens want to subscribe to the podcast? I mean, what the hell is going to go on? So here's the controversial prediction. Cliff High forecasted that following an appearance by Donald Trump on the Joe Rogan experience, humanity would experience a major extraterrestrial event with the invasion expected to occur precisely 39 days after the podcast episode.
This prediction adds to high's reputation for combining unusual linguistic patterns with futuristic events. All right. Well, stay tuned for tomorrow's episode where we find out if the aliens did in fact invade, or maybe, maybe we'll just never know. Maybe they're going to invade in secrecy. Either way, uh, wild times we live in.
I don't even know what's real and what's fake anymore, to be quite honest. Well, sadly, this story seems real. James Van Der Beek, uh, discussing his cancer battle here. He was on good morning, America. How are you physically and emotionally right now? Uh, physically I'm great. I'm feeling really good. Um, emotionally, you know, it's a lot.
It's really, uh, it's really a ride. How, when you first, no one wants to hear those words, you have cancer. Yeah. What went through your mind when you, when you first heard those words? Um, I was honestly in shock. I was doing what I thought I needed to do by getting the colonoscopy, which, you know, obviously I did need to do.
Um, I was in amazing cardiovascular shape. I was eating what I thought was healthy. And I had a whole agenda for what I thought my year would be. And, uh, And what I thought my priorities would be in the next couple of weeks and months. And it's just the reality that all of that was going to change and take a different trajectory.
Uh, was, it felt like a nightmare, honestly, at first. Um, that I, that I couldn't quite wake up from. And, you know, yeah, it's a lot. And you said your optimism, your optimism is helping you a great deal. How so? Yeah, I mean, I, there are a couple things that I knew. As soon as I got diagnosed, I, I knew. All right, this is going to add many happy years to my life.
I'm going to make changes that I never would have made otherwise, that I'm going to look back on in 30 years and say, thank God this happened. So what can I do right now? In order to make that the case. Um, Yeah, look, I mean, I think this is all great. I think it's great he's going to share his story, which is going to lead to more men and women getting checked at the right time and screened.
This is what it all comes down to, right? Is if you have the proper healthcare, which this is why I'm such an advocate for universal healthcare in our country, because so many people don't do preventative screenings. They only go when the shit hits the fan. a fan and when it comes to cancers and things like that, sometimes it's too little, too late.
So, uh, you know, uh, just very good for him to share the story and also to have the optimism to say like, look, I'm going to beat this and I'm going to be healthier because of it. Uh, you know, um, we were, we'll continue covering his story and his message he's sharing. Well, Michelle Young shared a message today.
That being that she is now, uh, engaged, engaged. She's a, an engaged woman, bachelorette, Michelle Young engaged to Jack. Leah's. And, uh, there was a people article that came out. He proposed, I guess, back in October, but the article just came out and, uh, he did basically like a surprise commercial. He faked a commercial with her, uh, management team.
And she thought she was going to be on set for some commercial. And when she got to the set, it was actually Jack ready to propose. So we're very happy for a bachelor at Michelle. Good story. Indeed. Well, from Michelle Young story to another former bachelor at Rachel Lindsay, we actually have, this is breaking.
This came out minutes ago. It was just sent to me. This is Rachel Lindsay on The View discussing her breakup from Brian Abasolo. Here's what she had to say. I met my ex on The Bachelor. We're currently going through a divorce right now. And it's, it's really interesting. So we, we met, we dated for two and a half years.
We went, we got married. Um, and we were looked at as one of the more successful relationships that came from the show. Yeah. Anywhere I went, people would ask me about my relationship and how are you doing? And, um, you know, when are you having kids? All the things that were wrapped up in that. And you feel the public pressure.
to always let people know that everything's great, even though behind closed doors, that might not be the case or that you're working on it or that you're having a bad day or whatever it may be. And a lot of that is wrapped up in, you know, shame. You don't want to say that it failed. You're scared for people to see you in a different way.
How long did you know it was going south before you admitted it? One to yourself, the day after you got married, it's even, it's even hard to admit it. Publicly now, I would probably say maybe I saw signs before but before the marriage before the marriage But it's women were fixers and we think we can we can figure it out challenge to us.
They're a challenge to us But eventually I saw it more I would say Within two years identity becomes wrapped up in the relationship and you're afraid that that's the only way people see you But I'm here to tell you It's not. Like, you can take your power back, you can find your power within, and you can't, no one has to dim your light.
But you also can't control what your partner's doing on social media. Which is a challenge, right? Well, that's been true. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. She says, that's been true, and uh, what she didn't say, I, I'm gonna try to cover this on YouTube tomorrow so you can Actually see this or maybe, you know what, maybe we'll post this on the rush hour podcast, Instagram page, uh, because her facial expressions are hilarious.
Go to the rush hour with Dave Neal on Instagram and we'll have that clip for you. Oh, interesting stuff. Well, you know, not every relationship works out, but I agree. I mean, it must be very tough for Rachel to admit when something fails, like a relationship, because your whole public. Persona is built around that being happy.
And then, you know, like most things, it, uh, you know, it doesn't work out. It doesn't work out. What are you going to do? All right. Well, uh, we're cruising. We got some more stories to get to let's do wicked next. All right, here's a clip from Wicked director John Chu sharing how Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande redefined their roles, uh, They were looking, I guess, to cast a bunch of unknowns, but they settled on a couple of celebrities.
I read that originally you wanted to cast a bunch of unknowns. Yeah. But I look at this cast and it is so perfect. What was your thinking? Well, it was, you know, you're like, Wicked is a star making roles, let's go find fresh faces. But when those two walk in, I mean, you saw from that scene, the moment you look in their eyes, there's no doubt.
denying it. They just took those roles. Um, and Cynthia, of course, of course they can sing, but I think it's those little nuances, the details that make the movie. Um, so, but I read this was your largest casting call ever. You went all around the world and you ended up on these two. Yes. And I didn't believe like when Ari came in, like no way Ariana.
Grande could like commit herself to a role like this. You know, what's interesting is like a lot of times when you're like a pop star or celebrity, it's not by accident. Right. I remember when I lived in Boston, uh, working as an actor, the movie the town was coming through and, uh, Ben Affleck looked for literally months to find his lead female role.
They wanted to cast a local Boston chick. They wanted the accent. They wanted the grittiness. They, I mean, they looked. Everywhere. They auditioned everybody for this role. Who got it? But Blake Lively, right? Blake Lively got it. She, she rode a train up to Boston and she really committed to the part. And Ben Affleck was like, damn.
All right, that's it. You know? And it's like, she didn't get it because it was, she was randomly plucked from obscurity. She got it because. She worked really hard for the role and knew the nuances and just nailed it. Well, now we've actually got, uh, Cynthia Erivo. Uh, she says she's excited for sing along screenings, even though some people are pleading, please don't sing.
Here's what she had to say. Miss Erivo. So when it comes to all the sing along, right. Are you excited for the actual sing along where people can actually sing along? Oh, you're going to actually attend one? Is that going to be like a pop up? Alright, so she's signing autographs. It's terrible audio. But she said she might attend a sing along.
Oh, wouldn't that be fun? Was I pronouncing her name wrong? Is it Erevo? Arevo? Uh, either way, uh, yeah. I mean, gosh, if you're a fan of, uh, that that'd be like going to a Taylor Swift documentary screening and Taylor Swift pops out, uh, which does happen, you know, every once in a while. Uh, all right. Well, we have some update to the Trevor Lawrence hit from Sunday.
The Texans, Ajir Al Shair was suspended for three games over the hit. The NFL threw the book at him, uh, for the hit suspending him without pay for three games. The league made its ruling official on Tuesday morning saying his past offenses for personal fouls and sportsmanship related rules violations factored into the decision.
Well, there you go. I mean, yeah, he's, you know, you gotta be careful out there and play by the rules. I thought it was a very bang, bang play, but again, I guess I'm in the minority. When you look at it, people say, no, he should have known better. And you got to lay off. I think it's got to be very challenging with these mobile quarterbacks though, because sometimes they'll like faux slide and then juke you.
But Hey, what can you do? All right. I tell you what we are on to our single mom wish list. You guys loved yesterday. We had Alison and now we have Jana. I'm going to share Jana's voicemail for why she could use our help. In the community that we have, there's a link in the description to Jana's Amazon wishlist.
If there's anything on the list you want to purchase, there's items literally ranging from 5 to 300. You can, you can buy a basketball hoop, or you can just buy a tennis ball. I mean, literally anything. Uh, Jana's got a son named Owen. He's 12 and her story is absolutely, uh, heart wrenching. Uh, an emotional, have a listen.
Hi, Dave. This is Janet from North Carolina. I'm going to do this over trying to get through without crying and taking too much time. I'm a single mom to a beautiful 12 year old boy who is the light of my life. He is my ray of sunshine. I adopted him from foster care and he's had a really hard time since our divorce.
And this is the hardest year. We have ever had, and he still believes in Santa, and I don't want to let him down. Thank you to your community. Thank you to everybody. And I just wish blessings on everybody, especially single parents, because it's hard. It's hard being a mom, and a dad, and to work full time.
And Dave, I love watching you with Augie. Keep it up. Because he will always remember these times, even infant times, he will remember. Thank you again. You know, it's so sweet to receive these voicemails. We're going to have them for the next 13 days, every afternoon rush. And it's a quite a responsibility to try to get these things promoted and share with our audience, because I want everyone's wishlist to receive five or 10 items.
I mean, wouldn't that be amazing to get 10 items or more who knows. So when you click on the link in the description, it's going to have. Everyone's wishlist, all 13 or however many, uh, single moms that we have here. We opened it to single dads too, but I don't think we received any single dad submissions.
We're just trying to help people, you know, it's a season of giving and it's a season to feel, uh, alive. And to feel like we can help out not just our friends and family, but strangers as well. And there's a lot of strangers that may have only one thing in common, and that's that they're a part of our community.
So the one thing I can try to control is to bring them forward and say, Hey, we got some people we can help. We can't solve the budget deficit, the wars abroad, we can't. Kind of, you know, affect change in those greater ways. But on an individual level, we have people here. We have teens, toddlers, uh, kids of all ages that we're going to support.
And who knows what a little bit of inspiration and guidance and love might do to their journey as they continue to grow and try to be good people. All right. Well, let's take a turn to home alone. One of my favorite, if not the best Christmas movie of all time. Well, you know, it starred Macaulay Culkin, but did you know that the younger, uh, kid in the show, uh, the kid who was drinking the diet Pepsi and peeing himself is Kieran Culkin.
You know, I think that's the same actor from the, uh, from the, uh, show, um, uh, succession, right? Well, he explains how, when he shot the movie. He had no idea what Home Alone was about when he made the movie with his brother Macaulay. Um, drink this Coke, wear the glasses, say the thing that you memorize, look cute and go home.
Kieran Culkin recalled of filming Home Alone. Uh, he says, I have no idea what the movie was about when I saw it and I was in it. Uh, he's now 42. Does that make you guys feel old or what? The kid who peed his pants and home alone is now 42. Uh, in this article, he says, I was at the premiere and I was dying laughing.
It was the funniest. thing I had ever seen. He added of watching the family comedy for the first time. I had no idea what the movie was about. His brother Macaulay shot to fame as the star of Home Alone, Kevin McAllister. As a young kid, Kieran portrayed Kevin's cousin Fuller. When Jesse Eisenberg asked Kieran how he would have made it through Home Alone's shoot without anybody explaining the movie's storyline, the succession actor answered, drink this Coke, wear the glasses.
So yeah, how fun is that? Uh, it's always good to see a, uh, you know, a movie that's literally decades old and you learn something new about it. All right. Well, John Bonnet Ramsey, the father of murdered six year old John Bonnet Ramsey joined Cuomo on News Nation to discuss what he believes can still be done with regards to trying to solve the cold case.
And here is a Geraldo Rivera actually apologizing to John Bonnet Ramsey. Have a listen. What is your perspective now, uh, as we have John Ramsey here about where your head was when you did that mock trial and where you are today? Let me just say to John Ramsey that I deeply apologize to you for what you and your family have suffered.
And of course what happened to JonBenet, 6 years old, who would now be 34 years old, which is Uh, an incredible fact how long this case has been, uh, center, front row center in the American consciousness. So when I say I am sorry, I don't apologize for my reporting, but I don't know what happened. I just want you to know that I lament.
Contributing to the hurt that you have endured. Let me first say, Raul, I accept your apology and thank you. What we want done two things we want done. Um, we want the evidence that has been previously tested and never tested. We think there's something that has never been tested. We don't know that for, for sure, but it appears that's the case.
We want that. Resampled by one of the cutting edge labs that's out there. The reason we need to retest is in order. It plays into the 2nd thing we want done. And that is to use this familial genealogy research approach.
To find the killer, you know, so this is what's interesting is it's been 30, almost 30 years. There is a lot of new technology that can be used, uh, but it's still a fascinating and devastating story. And yeah, I mean, how, how painful when entertainment news. And pop culture gets a hold of such a tragic story like this.
I'm sure the wounds are just reopened, but, um, it would be fantastic if they were able to make any, uh, you know, moves to use new technology there. Okay. Well, I got a couple more stories to get to, but we got to take a quick break. We'll be back with more right after this. How about this for a crazy story to report, CBS Mornings is sharing the dash cam footage that deputies had in Southern Illinois when a pregnant mom's brakes, I guess, failed.
A dramatic early morning rescue in Southern Illinois after a pregnant woman dialed 911 to say Her car would not stop. Sheriff's deputies responded, raced to help her as the runaway vehicle headed toward a freezing lake. I need help. Start working a panics 911 call. I'm 20 weeks from you. I cannot die today.
On the other end, a dispatcher trying to direct the woman to safety. Turn right at the next road. Okay, if you don't turn, you're gonna go into a lake. Deputies jumped into action. Catching up to the runaway car, they say, was traveling at about 30 miles per hour on a dark rural road southeast of St. Louis.
Their brake lights were illuminating, and she was not slowing down. Deputy Tyler Coffey was driving right behind her. He conducted a maneuver called a rolling roadblock. Once I got in front of her vehicle Slow down. I'm gonna hit car. I'm gonna hit him. And then her bumpers, uh, met mine and slowly we came to a stop.
It all happened so quickly. The driver who is not being identified did not realize deputies were trying to help her stop. I didn't mean to. I swear. No, they know. Hey, ma'am, it's okay. They know the driver and her dog who was in the car were both Unharmed and deputies say there was very little damage to either car.
Wild stuff. Well, glad we have a happy ending there. I mean, what a, what a wild ride that is. The brakes went out. I mean, geez, what a nightmare. Uh, but yeah, good, good to hear that there was a happy ending to that story. And let's go to a happy ending to this podcast episode by sharing, uh, the one and the only Jon Stewart as he perfectly uses humor to break down the absurdity of politics.
You know what, ladies and gentlemen, hypocrisy isn't illegal, nor is it particularly unusual in politics. It's not like he's ever going to run again, so why not take care of your kid? Even if you said you weren't gonna, I respect it, I don't have a problem with it. The problem is the rest of the Democrats made Biden's pledge to not pardon Hunter, the foundation of their defense of America, this grand experiment.
One political party remains committed to the rule of law and the other doesn't. It's that simple. Hunter Biden's not above the law. No one is above the law. Democrats stand for the rule of law. We accept the outcome because that's how the rule of law works. Because the justice system that convicted his only surviving son is the same justice system he's vowed to protect.
And if that doesn't tell you who Joe Biden is. I don't really know what does. I think I know what does.
And now look at the dance Democrats have to do. Be honest, the only reason why they went after Hunter the way they did, and I've talked to many federal prosecutors about this, is because he's the president's son. People have to remember, the president has lost two children already, and he does not need to lose another one to more political witch hunts.
The, you know, crowing from Republicans, but we're talking about, you know, Donald Trump is a convicted felon. Who literally pardoned his daughter's father in law and just made him ambassador to France. So for anyone that wants to clutch their pearls now, because he decided that he was going to pardon his son, I would say take a look in the mirror.
Uh, ma'am, we will take a look in that mirror, but we are taking off, so Alright, so you can just see, I mean, look, the hypocrisy exists, and this is why you can't have these conversations with your family, because there'll always be that whataboutism. Well, what about this? Well, what about that? It's like, yeah.
Yeah, it's a dirty, crazy world out there. Maybe the South Koreans got it right with their martial law. Maybe this democracy thing really should fail. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. It'll all work out. I think it has in the past. Well, you know, it always works out until it doesn't right. Ask Rachel Lindsay. All right.
That's going to do it for us. We are done here. If you want, I got a couple of good YouTube videos out today, covering some of the news in the world.
