Welcome to the rush hour, your daily dose of pop culture for your rush hour ride, buckle up and enjoy the drive with your host, stand up comedian, Dave Neal. Good morning, everybody. Happy Thursday. Thursday to you. It's October 17th, 2024. And I've got all of your entertainment and pop culture news in one place on this morning's rush.

We've got bachelor winner, Kelsey discussing how she's learning to navigate the world of public relationships. And also a quick recap of last night's golden bachelorette episode. Plus, uh, we have a drone problem or is it an alien problem or maybe it is a drone alien problem. We'll get down to the bottom of that story.

Plus the tragic death of One Direction star, Liam Payne, and we've then got pro dancer, Artem Chigvinsev, scoring a legal win against soon to be ex Nikki Bella, as we've continued to cover that story. Also Kamala Harris went on Fox news last night. What everyone is saying about the interview and a neuroscientist explains why it is we get duped with information.

or excuse me with misinformation in the first place. We've got all these stories and so much more coming up next on the morning rush. Well, I guess we better start with the rough news. Former one direction star Liam Payne was found dead after falling from the third floor of his hotel room. In Buenos Aires, Argentina, here's what David Muir had to say.

Breaking news, the sudden death of former One Direction member Liam Payne. Police say he fell from the third floor at his hotel. He was just 31. ABC's Trevor Ault with the details, just coming in tonight. Tonight, a shocking tragedy in the music world. Former One Direction member Liam Payne died. Dead in Argentina.

Local authorities say the 31 year old pop star fell from his third floor hotel room in Buenos Aires. Payne had been staying at the Casa Sur Hotel. Paramedics pronouncing him dead at the scene.

Singer was part of a global phenomenon when One Direction exploded in popularity in 2010, with concerts drawing massive crowds. After the group went on hiatus in 2016, Payne transitioned into a solo career, this year releasing the song Teardrops. Paine leaves behind one young child, recently sharing this photo of his son looking up at his dad on a billboard.

David, local authorities say Paine fell about 45 feet and now an investigation and an autopsy will be performed. Paine had been in Argentina attending the concert of one of his former bandmates. Yeah, real bummer stuff there. I mean, look, it said he had substance abuse issues and, uh, you know, who knows what actually went down.

Uh, we'll, uh, we'll let you know if we find out, but just a sad story all around. Well, in other bizarre news, uh, and before we get to the Bachelor story, we have a bizarre drone story. Uh, mysterious drones reportedly breached high, highly restricted U. S. airspace. Some think this is an alien, uh, sort of, uh, wreak.

Con mission happening. What do you guys think? America has what sure seems like a very serious new drone problem. This is a security issue that's gone all the way to the white house. I'm talking about multiple major breaches of the most restricted us airspace, including some of our most sensitive military and national security sites.

Now all of this is based first on a report in the wall street journal, including on the record interviews with multiple us generals and many other government officials. But the Pentagon acknowledged the incursions as they called it yesterday at a briefing. So in October of 2023 Five drones flew over a little known site in Nevada used for nuclear weapons experiments.

In recent months, more unidentified drone swarms, as they've been described, flew near Edwards Air Force Base near Los Angeles. And last, uh, December, in the biggest incursion publicly known, a dozen or more drones per night for 17 nights straight circled the area of Langley Air Force Base along the Virginia shore.

This is an area that includes the Navy's SEAL Team 6, you heard of them, and Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval port in the world. Now one of these drones recovered after it hit a tree, had been taking pictures of U. S. Navy vessels. So a lot of big questions here. Where are the drones coming from? Is it hobbyists or a hostile nation?

And why didn't the military just shoot them down? Or is it, uh, something more like, I, no, I, I actually, okay. So I thought it would have been an alien thing until I listened to their, uh, sort of saying that one of the drones was shot down or excuse me, it was crashed down. So I guess it's not an alien. Cause, uh, maybe the alien drones wouldn't be taking photos or maybe they would, I don't know.

Do they use, uh, Sony's like, what, how does this even work? Right? Listen, I, I have a drone. I, I, I love drone photography. I have a DJI drone. What's scary though, is that DJI is made, uh, in, uh, by the Chinese. And it's scary because, you know, you're not trying, trying to. Bring out a conspiracy where there is none, but you, you think that it's one of our adversaries and here they have a very popular drone.

They make the best drone and you can buy them and then just fly them all over the country. And then do they get to just map out our country from that? Like the amount of data that can come from that is probably very interesting. I don't know, just a thought. You know, we're not at war with anybody, uh, but, uh, again, you know, maybe, maybe don't let these drones, maybe we can start shooting these drones down.

I don't know. Maybe not. All right. Well, uh, here's one thing I'd like to shoot down more Vanderpump rules, spinoff shows. Uh, but again, they've got the Valley, which is, I guess, a spinoff kind of, of, uh, Vanderpump rules. And Tom Sandoval actually says. Never say never to the valley. And again, the Vanderpump rules might not come back.

You know, maybe the show never comes back or it takes a long hiatus. So would he go on the valley? Here's his answer. Jax recently came out and said he was very shocked that you guys rekindled your friendship. You know, did you feel the same way? Um, no, I mean, me and Jax are friends. I know he's going through a lot, so, um, you know, obviously I've been there in that situation, so I just wanted to, uh, support my friend.

Okay. Yeah. Is there a chance we'll see you on his, you know, spin off television show? Uh, who knows? Who knows what the future holds, you know what I mean? You never know. Now, he said you are one of his absolute best friends, you know, and that, you know, you guys hang out a lot. You know, do you feel the same way about him?

Is he, you know? Jax is definitely, like, you know, we have so much history and so many years together. I mean, I've seen that guy. And, uh, ups and downs. I mean, we both have with each other. And when one person says they're your best friend and you're, and you say, well, we've been together for years, maybe it's not reciprocated, but either way, I mean, these TMZ interviews, they, Tom Sandoval eats him up.

I mean, he's going to live on reality TV as long as they'll have him. We know that for sure. Well, Artem Chigvintsev was on reality TV as a dancer on Dancing with the Stars, and now he nabs a legal win in Nikki Garcia, which is Nikki Bella divorce case, no anger management and no supervised visitation. As we know, the prosecutors declined to prosecute him.

For domestic violence. Following his initial arrest, he walked away with his best case scenario. Following a two hour, two hour hearing in his Nikki Garcia divorce case, according to documents obtained by TMC, the professional dancer and the retired WWE star had a hearing in the Napa County, California court.

Tuesday, where a judge ordered the exes to share custody of their son, four year old Mateo. This was certainly the outcome the Dancing with the Stars alum was hoping for, as he previously requested joint custody when he filed his divorce response in September. Nikki sought sole custody of Mateo when she filed for divorce, requesting Artem have Supervised visitation with their son and undergo anger management classes.

Uh, TMZ broke the original story where Nikki was granted a restraining order against Artem and he again was arrested. And, um, but he shares a different side of the story painting her as the aggressor. And it really is a, he said, she said, so he was arrested for DV. And then again, there was no charges actually put on him.

So we'll have any more updates as they come. Uh, here is Kelsey. From the bachelor, uh, Joey's fiancee responding to a tick tocker who says she was acting weird at the dancing with the stars finale, have a listen. Nope. Something was off there with Joey and Kelsey. Something. I still feel like I'm very new to having a relationship in the public eye.

And, you know, sometimes it stinks whenever people want to pick it apart. But I am thankful for all of the great things that it's brought me, like Joey. And the amazing opportunities that we've been able to share together. Um. But people like to assume things. And, um, sometimes it's hard for me not to say something back.

I feel the need to say something back. And so I am going to, cause I feel like it's going to make me feel better. But last night was dedication night. And a lot of people dedicated their songs to people that made a big impact in their life, uh, people that they lost, people that they've seen suffer through illnesses.

And, uh, there was a couple of moms as well. So it was a hard night for me. Um, seeing how I've lost my mom. Six years ago to breast cancer, um, I really resonated with a lot of these stories, um, of you know, having amazing moms and all of these things and, um, it, yeah, struck a nerve for me. Um, so I was a little emotional last night, um, so I guess she was right of, you know, something's not right.

Yeah, I was, um, I was missing my mom a little extra and, um, Joey's dance was so beautiful and it meant a lot to me. me and it did make me emotional because he dedicated it to me. So I wasn't grinning ear to ear. I also get a lot of anxiety before Joey's dances. Um, sometimes I get a little lightheaded during them.

Um, so yeah, I mean, whenever the video got me, I was smiling with my mouth closed, but I was still so proud of him. Um, I just, you know, was in my feelings a little bit, um, with how special it was and also, you know, missing my mom. So yeah. Yeah, I think that maybe we should just focus more on positives and not always assume the worst of things.

Um, that's all. I love it. There it is, Kelsey Anderson saying, Let's assume the best in people. I always say everyone's trying their best with the information they have. And I gotta tell you, that initial TikToker who said something was off with Joey and Kelsey tonight, I bet she feels really dumb right now when Kelsey says, Yeah, you know what was off?

was I felt really emotional because my mom passed away and in a night where everyone was getting sentimental, it made me think about my own lost relationship with my mother. You jackass. You know what I mean? Now she said, no shit, don't share any hate with anybody, but it just goes to show that so much empathy and grace can come when you know where someone else stands, like where they are in life.

I just say this, why don't we start having empathy and grace for people when we don't know their story and just assume that maybe they're having a rough day and they're trying their best. I'm going to try my best to bring the heat to you coming up next after a quick word from our sponsor. Well, speaking of Kelsey Anderson, uh, as you guys know, her father is competing on dancing with the star.

Excuse me. Her father is competing on the golden bachelorette. Uh, and that is really because we got to meet Kelsey Anderson's father during her hometown visit, when Joey met her parents, or excuse me, her father. And we got to learn the story of how Kelsey's mom had passed away of breast cancer. Well, everyone loved her dad, Mark Anderson, and so much that they were like, get him on.

Golden Bachelorette. I don't know. Maybe he's a couple of years too young. You know, he's, he's a little bit younger than some of the other cast members, but I think he would be great for Golden Bachelorette. He just seems like a great dude. Well, he finally got his one on one date last night on Golden Bachelorette with Joan Vasos and John's doing a great job too.

And on that one on one date, uh, they, they, They, they connected, but it was very clear to Joan that there wasn't more to the relationship and, uh, the following day she pulled him aside and said, Hey, Mark, uh, I really wanted to let you know before the rose ceremony that it's just not going to work out. And she said it in such a beautiful way.

She didn't want to, you know, she didn't want to do the thing where it's this big thing at the rose ceremony. She wanted to talk to him as a human. So Mark understood. And he said, look, I want what's best for you and go, go get them. And he announced to the guys that he was leaving. And this is what touches me more than anything.

When you see these men kind of all love on each other, the male on male. I guess, you know, friendship that they are showing is so powerful. And to me, it feels as if, and maybe you guys can relate. I'm not so sure. It feels as though we're getting to watch adult men, you know, you know, in this generation, the older men, men that would probably be our dad's age, have emotions that we maybe didn't get to see our parents have, I don't know about you guys, but.

Um, it just seems, it seems so right to watch and so therapeutic because as Mark said, Hey, I'm going to leave these guys got choked up. Pascal, the French guys, uh, you know, he's like, Oh, Mark's Mark became my best friend. What do you know? They're all acting like, uh, you know, he's gone for good and they're going to have reunions and they're going to catch up and they're going to have this bond that no one else.

Knows anything about because they're the first cast of the Golden Bachelorette I just found it very beautiful and I wanted to share my thoughts with you guys as while Mark wasn't right for Joan and Charles wasn't right for Joan and some of these other, Jack wasn't right, some of these other cast members that left They all had such a lasting impression on each other and I just found that very Endearing to see, um, and it, maybe it's because, and maybe I'm being very, um, I don't know, elementary in the way I'm looking at these men, but we think of the older generations as kind of being stiff and rigid without, you know, unable to share their emotions in a lot of way.

I look at it as, you know, a lot of these older guys had a dad that only shook their hand and they never knew what it was like to really hug and be, uh, you know, and, uh, A very, really embracing of the, of the love that friends can share. So, so I just like to see that, that they're getting to live this moment in this experiment outside of falling in love with Joan and outside of becoming the quote unquote winner of the show.

You just get to see that they're, they're all winning. They're all winning by being a part of this experience. And like I said before, I mean, they, they, they exist in their own families as the guy who's, you know, uh, the, the dad or the grandfather, the decision maker, the prideful man, they, you almost like the, I feel like the older you get, you lose your peer group because someone else, they're having a family and their grandfathers.

And to see all these men come together as dads, grandfathers, and, you know, And what not, and to see them all just confide in each other. Again, I found it to be beautiful. So Mark is gone. Will he be the next golden bachelor? We'll have to see. We'll have to see how it all plays out. I'll have my full recap on golden bachelor on today's YouTube.

All the X's and O's of what went down. Cause there was a fun, you know, bowling date and. Who's, you know, all of all the nuances over there on the YouTube today. So make sure to go check that out. So a lot of good stuff to get into. Maybe you're feeling like you aren't worth as much money as you wish you were.

Well, how about this story? Fire festivals, Billy McFarland says he owes 26 million. So, just as a thought today, if you are not where you want to be in life, just know you're probably not 26 million in debt. How much money do you owe? I owe approximately, that's a good question, I owe approximately 26 million in restitution.

Have you chipped away at that at all? Yes, every month I pay, so I have a percentage of my personal income that goes back directly to restitution. And then in addition to that, I'm doing more. By dedicating 10 percent of the profits from FIRE, you know, forever, until it's paid back, back to restitution as well.

What is your income coming from right now? I do a lot of marketing work, so I work for a lot of venture capital backed startups, helping them create viral moments for their brand. And also do various, you know, media work, TV appearances, I did a karate combat fight, so like, literally I'm fighting to pay people back in every possible way.

Here's a, here's a sort of theory I had, Billy, from FireFest, if you want to pay people back, throw FireFest 2 and make it bigger and better! The Fiery Fist! Festival, we're going to call it. Well, look, I mean, Hey, I, I actually, you know, in some ways I kind of feel for the guy, you know, they always say fake it till you make it and he faked it and now he owes 26 million, but hey, what can you do out there?

You know, you tried your best. Isn't that what you need? Well, no, I mean, seriously, uh, good on him though, for, I guess, paying some of it back, I don't know. Here's an interesting wildlife story for you. If you know me, if you really know me, you know, I have an interest in a since extinct animal. Called the thylacine.

Are you familiar with this animal? It's like part tiger, part coyote. It's very bizarre looking. Well, how a putrid find in a museum cupboard could be the key to bringing the Tasmanian tiger back to life. That's right. The thylacine is also called the Tasmanian tiger. A well preserved thylacine head was a gruesome sight, but it also contained RNA molecules crucial to reconstructing the extinct animal's genome.

Breakthroughs sometimes turn up in unexpected places. The researchers working on the international push to bring back the thylacine say they found theirs in a long ignored bucket in the back of a cupboard at a Melbourne museum. It contains an astonishingly well-preserved head of the extinct marsupial, also known as the Tasmanian tiger.

It was literally a head in a bucket of ethanol in the back of a cupboard that had just been dumped there with all the skin removed and been sitting there for about 110 years. Professor Andrew Pasch, head of the Thialysine Integrated Genetic Restoration Research with the perfect acronym. Tiger Lab at the University of Melbourne says it was pretty putrid, a completely gruesome site.

People had charted large. Chunks off of it. Well, either way, I find this fascinating. Now the Tasmanian tiger, AKA the thylacine has been spotted, uh, by people. They say they think they see it randomly running across the street in remote areas. So whether or not it's actually extinct, I'm not sure. There are only a few photos of it because there was one decades ago that was still in a zoo, but it didn't have a mate.

So I don't know. I just like the thylacine. theory that there's a couple of families of thylacine living out there and why does it matter? I don't know. Again, it's just that idea that you just hope, uh, you just hope, uh, that some animal forms can continue to live even when we say they're technically extinct.

I don't know. So anyway, if anyone has any updates, I know I've got a lot of Australian listeners out there. If you've got any updates or have you spotted a thylacine or a Bigfoot, We like that too. We'll take a big foot, a good old Sasquatch story. Uh, please let me know. So the plan to de extinct the thylacine is a project driven by Colossal, a Texas based biotechnology de extinction and species preservation company that's aiming to recreate the woolly mammoth in the dodo using genetic engineering.

techniques. All right. Well, we already covered it doing the woolly mammoth. So Hey, bring it all back. What could this do? You know, this can't be a, this, this feels like a final destination movie. Like you're going to re engineer this. And also some pandemic comes out of nowhere. I've seen this happen before.

I know how it plays out. All right. Well, as promised, I gave you all your non political stories first. Now, next I'm going to get to Kamala Harris, uh, being grilled by Fox news. That story's coming up after a quick word from our sponsors. All right. So last night was a big night for the Kamala Harris campaign as she's running, obviously for president from the Democratic Party ticket.

And she went on Fox news. Uh, they've been, you know, kind of saying, uh, you know, people have complained that she's not doing any hard hitting, uh, interviews. Well, Fox news gave her that hard hitting of interview. I'm going to share what, uh, I'm going to share a, some praise and some criticisms for how it I have to say first, my point of view was that I only caught the second half, but Brett bear was literally asking her questions and then interrupting her nonstop.

I don't know. I mean, this is just what I hate about TV is that they, they didn't have, they, they should have done a longer interview. Do a, do an hour or two, three hour long. Like. Why are we chopping these up, these 20 minute, uh, you know, interviews on 60 Minutes? Like, air the dang thing. Either way, here's what CNN had to say, and then we'll get to what Sean Spicer, a Republican had to say.

I totally agree, Ashley. I think this strategy from Harris was a Google strategy. She wanted Fox viewers to start to Google some of the things she was saying, because some of the comments she was making in this interview are foreign to the Fox audience. For example, Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. General Mark Milley, saying Trump is a fascist to the core, that's barely been covered on Fox News.

So she was able to get some of those talking points in. This was the most adversarial interview Kamala Harris has probably ever done. Instead of getting to debate Trump again, she got to debate Brett Baier. And a lot of viewers are going to come away saying, Wow. She's willing to do that. That's a sign of toughness and strength.

Now, what's interesting is people are either saying she crushed it or saying that she's done. There's actually a lot of people online saying that the polls are way off and they think it's going to be a landslide win for her. I don't think that's the case. Here's what Don Lemon had to say about the technical aspect of the interview.

Look, I got to say, this is a tough interview, but I think she's doing really well. It's right there's doing a good job. And so is she. This tough type of interview is going to be great for her. She's holding her own. I mean, look, I think she wasn't going to lose any audience and she can only gain voters at this point.

Here's what Sean Spicer, former White House press secretary, had to say about her interview and how it didn't hit the spot. This was designed to reach out to moderate, either Republicans or Independents, who watch Fox News, who were, uh, Shall we say Harris curious? Kamala curious. Kamala curious. Uh, I'll go for you for the alliteration.

Uh, did she give them reason to be more than curious? I don't think so. I mean, the immigration answer off the bat was disqualified. That was the first, that was the first topic, but it went on and on and on because she can't answer the question. And I give Brett a lot of credit for going back to the question.

Okay. These were your policies. You repealed 90 executive orders out of the gate. Don't talk about a bill that happened three and a half years later. Talk about the policies that you implemented and acted on. Right out of the gate. She couldn't answer that question. I think that's the number one issue facing a lot of voters.

And for people who were common, commonly curious there, that wasn't going to satisfy them. And then at the end to say, I'm going to be very different from Joe Biden tonight. Didn't move the needle. Well, I don't know if I agree or disagree about whether it moves the needle, but the needle, it's. itself is so delicate right now, so far as to say it is a 50 50 deadlocked tie.

Although some people online are saying the polling is getting it wrong. Now in, of course, 2016 the polling was wrong, uh, whereas the polling thought Clinton was going to win and then Trump kind of outperformed the polls. Now some people are saying it's the exact opposite. Have a listen. Is getting Trump wrong again, but this time they're inflating his numbers and I'm going to prove to you why.

As of right now, the race is a dead heat tie from a polling perspective, and a lot of people think well, Trump overperformed in 2020 and in 2016, so isn't he really winning right now? No, he's not. But, we have to understand what exactly happened in 16 and 20 to understand what's happening today. Back in 2016, the national polls were actually pretty accurate, but the battleground state polls, especially in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, were wildly incorrect.

But why did that happen? It's because Trump spoke to a group of voters that almost nobody had previously and they got very excited to vote for him. And that group was uneducated white people. That's not meant to be an insult, it's just a representation of the demographics that pushed Trump over the edge.

But it's also a representation of the people that made the polling wrong. And you can see it right down here. This is why the state polls were wrong. It's because that group historically did not turn out that well. Like, yeah, they voted for Republicans, but their turnout rate was low. Trump Activated them in a way that polling couldn't capture and that's how he outperformed polling in these states and in 2020 it happened again But this time it was for a different reason trump took a very unique approach to his 2020 campaign Instead of chasing after undecided voters and trying to moderate his message.

He tried to turn out red counties and at a rate that they've never turned out before by amping up his base in a big way. He did this because the core of his 2016 campaign was being this agent of change. He was different from politicians who was going to come in and change the game. He couldn't run on that in 2020.

He had to run on the chaos, fears about lockdowns, vaccine mandates. All right. So they talk about that chaos and fear, you know, and it's very interesting to think of the different, uh, ways that can activate voters. We actually have the neuroscientist, Dr. Rachel Barr here. to share why misinformation sticks in the brain and there is a little bit of correlation.

Have a listen. Why is it so difficult to change somebody's mind after they've been exposed to online misinformation? You're asking the right girl because I'm Rachel, the neuroscientist. Nothing quite captivates human attention like fear, rage, shame, and loneliness. And algorithms, personalized algorithms, learn quickly that that's what captivates human attention.

We scroll, which makes us feel bad. Which makes us scroll even more, which makes us feel even worse, right? This is where the trap really catches us. The more that you're feeling things like fear and shame, the more that you and your brain, consciously and not, will be working to build a narrative around that.

Just for a second, step back and think about humans in the wild. It's very rare that you would be feeling that level of fear and shame without good reason, like running away from saber toothed tigers or whatever. So your brain says, alright, I'm feeling ashamed a lot, there must be a reason why, we'll find a way to justify those.

The very emotions that are being used against you by other people. for pernicious algorithmic cycles. And those justifications are not trivial, right? They're like fundamental shifts in worldviews, fundamental shifts in sense of identity. Reversing those justifications and changes is very difficult. Even if you can, and you can change somebody's mind at a factual level, that initial justification emotional residue tends to stick around.

That will be the thing that informs somebody's behavior, like which causes you advocate for, who you vote for, like that will have much more of a bearing than all of the logical stuff. Yeah, and I always said that when you're, uh, sold on fear, you can't be logical, like the brains can only work with one versus the other.

I hope you enjoyed this episode, I hope you learned something new, and I hope, uh, we put a little smile to your face on your way to work. And we'll catch you on your way home.
